Thanks for your comments everyone. To be fair, I must admit, I liked the original landscape....well, actually version 2, particularly as mostly, I photograph landscapes around here in NZ. But, I felt it was just a lovely landscape and for this platform needed a more artsy, tense, emotional feel to it; hence the texture. I liked that the lighting then received more focus, bringing the whole story down to the storm and the mountain ridges. I think I agree that losing so much of the light on the sun storm possibly detracted.
Great points and it's very enlightening to consider how others envisage a final outcome. Certainly gives you more perspectives to ponder as you edit.
Hope you're all hanging in there under lock-down!!! All the best. |

Hi Karl....what can I say! A highly impactful image if you'll allow the pun! It's a fabulous pice of work and even more so after reading the process that you went through to achieve it. There must have been a lot of patience required! Well worth it, though. You must be rather proud! I love it! Quite surreal!

Hi Lauren,
Yes, I think if you were using Weston's pepper to emulate, you would have perhaps placed emphasis on a single capsicum and its form, considering the light fall, colours, 3D aspect and the very rich tones of black and white. Weston actually stated that his work "was just a pepper - nothing else - ". He's an incredibly interesting photographer and it's well worth taking the time to consider his style, particularly as a quarantine exercise. Karl has provided a nice example, I feel.
Anyway, I think you have set-up an interesting still life with a good cross section of tones and textures, but were the jars a necessary part of the story? I also wonder about the dark square on the tiles?
Your title mentions Covid so I wonder if that could have been more apparent in the image? |

Hi Sandra...nice to see something pretty come out of our lock downs, although I must say, I'm enjoying ours...getting through the list of To Dos that's been sitting there untouched for months.
This is a pretty image and I like the water droplets...clean and fresh, to the point I can almost smell the scent!
I think I would have liked the black to have continued for the whole background as my eye keeps going to the left and right corners and the light, middle right.
I wonder if f8 may have given you some more areas in focus as I feel there is an area between the two yellow areas, that does not have detail. Macro is hard! |

Hi May.....I'm afraid I can't get into this image and I don't understand the title, but no matter, that's me. Someone else may love it and get more from it. Perhaps I'm more literal. Maybe not having the face so blown out may have helped and I don't understand the splotches. I like that you try different and intriguing ways with images. Keep it up. |

Hi Judith....interesting image........(photo illustration Karl? Must look into that, sounds intriguing). The more I look at this, the more I like it. I think I might like it better without the cup. I don't know that I like being reminded about "piggy people". But then again, it may lose part of its interest. To be honest Judith, I just don't know.
I like it, the colours, the textures and shapes. Well seen. |

Hi Marie...agree with all the comments from Sandra and Karl. Well done!! Not sure how the black background would work...would have to try it. I must admit, I do find the background a little busy with the subject matter being very busy too. Matter of choice though, I think.
I might have used curves to bring out some of the shadows from the blossoms, so the eye naturally follows a path of lighter blossoms from bottom to top. Maybe clone out the little branchy thing poking out between the flowers and casting a small shadow too.
Lovely composition (apart from the flowers heading out of the image). |
