I remember attending the Woodford Folk Festival in Queensland some years ago, where they end the festivities with a fire event along these lines. Your image captures the awesomeness of what I remember. I guess that's what you mean about the judges being there...or not.
I like that you have provided a figure in your image to give us a benchmark of the grandiosity of what was taking place. I agree with Susan re the dynamic perspective the image gains from the angle it has been taken from. I think you've done well using available light and still keeping the image sharp.
I imagine it was an awesome experience and I think you've captured it very well. |

Thanks Susan. Yes, I do agree re the vignette and I must say, I rather like your pano version. I kept the rocks in the foreground as they were the subject of my image, but nothing is lost if the crop is done. Just a different format. Wonderful that you have taken the time to share your thoughts by editing the image! I like it! |

Gosh, this is an image with impact! I must admit I found it quite unsettling on my first viewing. The marks on Georgia's face and her haunted expression conjured up thoughts of abuse. The title is ambiguous and lends to the possible mystery of the story. Is Georgia the Blacksmith or is the Blacksmith the perpetrator of her state or....? It is truly a fascinating image and looking at it more closely, tells us so much. I think you were right in retaining the blotchy skin. It is part of Georgia's story. Your black and white version removes these all important clues. I feel you have certainly achieved in shifting any focus at all away from the fact that she is naked with your composition. The tattoos, to me are not a focus either. They are an integral part of the complexity of your subject. I keep going to her eyes and the fact that they reflect the colour of her hair strikes me for some reason. I don't feel you need more space in the direction of Georgia's gaze as to me, it feels as if she is not looking at anything, but rather lost in her thoughts. I think you have done an amazing job of capturing the character and vulnerability of this young woman. To me it is a raw and very powerful image. Fabulous Mary!! |

A rather threatening image with that huge black cloud and a mysterious title! I think I would like to see more focus on the little town or the houses that look as if they will wear the impact of some pretty bad weather any minute! Was that what you were trying to capture? As it is, my eye is wandering around the image, not sure on where to settle. Was there any detail in your black cloud? A vignette could maybe have pulled the viewer's eye into the picture as I feel that the white sky is chopping your image in two. A love the whispy tendrils of the cloud's edge reaching out to destroy the peace and quiet of the day. There's a story there Anurada!! Remember though, these are just my thoughts. Others may perceive this quite differently. The subjectivity of photography! |

I see what you are getting at in trying to focus on the contrasting shapes Susan, and I think it works well, particularly with the vignette bringing the viewer's eye to the flowers and vase. I must admit though, that I love the vibrance of your sunflowers in the colour version. They're just beautiful.
You have some nice detail in the centre of your main flower and I wonder if perhaps using a curves adjustment layer or other, could have brought that in to play to make it stand out even more and get rid of the black areas that are not showing detail. The flower petals at the back are a little distracting, so I might have removed that head for the photo and I would have cloned out the shiny light areas on the vase. Just little points to consider when you are setting up a still life. Overall though, I think the image works well and is a lovely rendition of your sunflowers! |

Interesting thought Judith! I wonder. An interesting image which makes me think "book cover" for some reason...perhaps the mystery it conjures up. I really like the impact this image has - the contrast of the hot colours, perhaps suggesting danger, and the stark black shape of the fence. Is the shape human or other. There is a story here and that's what an image is all about. I love it and think you've done a great job in capturing this moment. Well seen! |
