Brightness level is up to you as the artist.

My guideline on this topic is: I always want the important detail to be readable by the viewer. I think it is here

One last thought. There were some bright areas in the background that are not patterned that I darkened, they become distractions so it is something I always do

I like your concept here and I know you will take it further

I too replace bland skies to bolster an image that I like otherwise. We are artists not photo journalists in this forum.

I like your end state. Sky replacement was a good move, it adds contrast and texture.

Well done

This a money shot in my view. The coach's intensity is captured perfectly.

I offer a few small mods to you

Using PS CC: I cloned out his watch, I painted over the light areas in the upper left, reduced the exposure of the scene overall but masked the coaches face so it was not affected, and then in NIK I used the Detail Extractor default preset which bring out details and lightens an image then back to PS CC, I masked the NIK change everywhere but the coach's face. I reduced opacity of that same layer to dial down the NIK impact -so its subtle

Emil

I love your desire to push the envelope in your photography as you did many times last year. This is another case in point for 2023. I, on the other hand, am still working on getting better contrast...

I liked the texture in your image from Topaz 2, that I do not use, I thought I would play with a variation on this cold Friday in STL.

I loaded both images in PS CC with the Topaz 2 pattern on top of the color image. I rendered the color shot in BW, added a mask to the patterned image so only the chain and post were visible and reduced the layer opacity to 55%.

An Immaculate image. The detail is just exquisite.

Any more that you can share?

Pull something out and post it

I have visited 3 times and each time it gets harder to shoot due to the unchecked growth of foliage. But I would go again in a heartbeat, you have to good vision to find the shots now

66 Jan 23 Comment Jack,

I too see wee bit of blue. Great shot no question but you may want to try an alternate version....

I imported your Jan image into PS CC, rendered into BW using Silver Efex Overexposed (EV +1) so the foliage was white, copied your Jan image above the BW layer, masked out the trees, changed the blend mode to Color and reduced the opacity to 80%

A little softer look but still colorful...

You must live in or close to a wine growing region with wonderful scenes...

66 Jan 23 Comment Melanie,

I like your approach of using tone to get your image rendered. In a perfect world, I would have liked to have the dead tree as the sole subject

I offer some ideas for you since the world in which we shoot is not perfect and we live with it as photographers. I took your submission and rendered it in NIK Silver Efex Dark Pop which brought the details in the rocks and sand. I deemphasized the live tree in LR Classic by using a brush to burn it and then again in the areas in shade. I also dodged the upper left corner

Food for though on a Jan day

I like your shot particularly the building very much. The tone difference between the foliage and the house clap boards gave me an aesthetics conundrum....(Less tree texture/tone and more building in a uniform tone overall is what I envision)

So I rendered your version in NIK Silver Efex Antique Plate II which fades the trees on the boarders and then I used Gavin Seim's Silver 5.0 Real Sepia tone which adds some detail back.

You nailed this one. The Albumen filter is a perfect choice for this old structure.

I like your Jan submission very much.

You could have said you were traveling the country in this rig and I would have bought it until I read backstory of Techatticup. I too am a fan of shooting old cars in places like Old Car City but Nelson is different in a good way (terrain, vehicle spacing etc).

My suggestion is to clone out the 3 vehicles on the left in the background to give your image the true isolated feel.

I too like your sepia version with a slight twist....I cropped the left and ring sides to keep the focus on the grasses but with some edge space to explore. In LR Classic I used the brush tool to reduce the grass highlights and boosted the exposure of the leafed plants in the center. A picture within your picture.

66 Jan 23 Reply Arik,

Thanks for your comments. Re NIK Color Efex Detail Extractor: agree that sometimes it creates an "overbaked" look so I too dial it back but it does a nice job of pulling out the details
