There is nothing on the building that will reflect IR like foliage does for example, it typically renders in white in a black and white image as a result. IR penetrates clouds to a degree and so they look a little more defined than in a color shot which adds interest. What I am wondering is does IR affect the look of bricks in some way. I will go back and try to replicate this shot with my Sony DSLR and see if there is a noticeable change.

I was trying to level the bridge span without compromising the image when you make these type of corrections in LR things rotate etc. I think the final decision rests with you
The fact that you have many of us engaged is a sign the image is well seen and worthy of a little extra work in your digital darkroom to get it just right from your perspective
Well done
(and I would love to have joined you in an 18 year old scotch).

LuAnn,
Thanks for feedback. See my reply to Bob regarding IR. I will try to understand the reason behind the softness.

Great suggestion and I think I can find a window in time where there a long shadows on the facade.

This image may be one of the first pure architectural infrared images that I have processed and shared. Typically my subjects are clouds, foliage, and a some sort of structure. So I am not sure right now if I was at fault for the softness or something happening at the wavelength my camera "sees" light. One simple check is to revisit the building with my DSLR.

You have two important tasks completed during this trip, You captured this bridge with great clouds and a quality beverage or two.
The soft puffy clouds are a perfect complement to the bridge steel. I saw two things atet I wanted to try with your image: 1) level the bridge without disrupting the scene too much - which I did using the sliders in LR transform with constrain crop checked and 2) darken the sky a bit at the top left - which I did using the Linear Grad tool in LR
Well done

Your idea to convert the driftwood original to series of swirls was spot on. You put in a good deal of work and shared your process which is always helpful.
For some reason I see the face of some sort of exotic bird with the two eyes and the lighter ed swirl in the lower left as the mouth. As Pete noted it is a mesmerizing image

I like your shot. The old building converted into a sculpture can be shot for many angles all yielding good compositions. Sepia is a good rendering choice and does give the old time feel
Food for thought on your submission. As Jennifer King would say the Hero of your shot is the old building so make the viewers eye go there by dodging it and to a lesser the walkway in front to lead the viewer in. I borrowed your original, converted to to BW and then in LR used the radial gradient to lighten the building vertical brickwork and the columns in front. I darken the sides a bit for contrast.
Lots of potential pathways on your shot

This is a well conceived submission for us to review. The diagonal bars bring my eye into the center of the frame where I move around the chain and up and down the vertical bars. Good contrast with the bars against the background. You dodged the center to bring us into your shot, I think maybe a touch too much since you have the natural contrast of the metal against the dark background. it is always an artist call
Well seen

Pete,
A little Hollywood magic at your home studio for sure.
Before I read your narrative, I would have guessed the portrait was of a older woman who complied with your request for a street photo. My apologies to your grandson or is it case of a makeup job well done?
Well done and I can't wait to see what you have for us in Oct

I second Pete's comments.
Until I read your writeup I would have bet good money you set up with your tripod and took this great shot. The newer iPhones are amazing devices particularly when you can drive the output in this direction
Wonderful work

I like it. It brings back the memories of looking at the photo albums of grand parents with some of the pictures yellowed. As you and Arik point out IR has greater application than most believe, myself included.

As I look at your scene, I came down the path and encounter a person hiking who is barely discernible due the vastness of this harsh desolate place in Iceland. The story is told

I don't remember seeing a pure sky composition in our group before so yours is a first, at least to me, and sets the bar quite high.
I see two scenes that work together, the chaotic contrails at the bottom set against crossing contrails creating a near perfect cross. The dark sky background is what is needed here. My only thought is to remove the new contrail , it is too perfect.

Spatially about as perfect as you could be here with the ferry spacing laterally when viewed against the first and last sailboat and there is space in front of the ferry as it moves out of the frame. I like the blue toning against the white boats with the lighten center touch.
Top marks to you Sir

Hmm Maybe so now that I reflect upon your input
Here is an update where I tried to reach a midpoint between the image I submitted and the original.
Thanks
