Thanks Richard. I did darken the trunk and I think it helps. I prefer this crop for the reasons above. I've spent time with it booth ways. |

Aldo,
The timing for your shot is spot on. Sky vs building lights. When I need to make perspective adjustments, I remind myself to shoot lose, so I have room to pull verticals and still have room on the edges.
Beautiful shot. |

Nice capture Jason. I like Richards post work a lot. I think I would clone out the trucks at the right hand women's knee as well. It sets a nice mood... perhaps the women are contemplating what lies before them and our focus is drawn to them and not the traffic on the road. Here we can create or own narrative. |

I love your idea of capturing the work flow. I would like to see more of the pile of bricks the man in the foreground is lifting from. It really helps me to shoot lose in situations like this. It's hard to keep track of everything at once, so I have to keep reminding myself to check the edges of the frame and back off or zoom out a little (one can crop in post). I think more is better in this situation so I wouldn't crop anyone out. For me the tilt isn't enough to be effective so I would straighten the shot even if I had to extend the edges. Thanks for sharing a dynamic and interesting shot. |

Nice. I like the tighter crop. I think I still see the reflection of the man you removed. Is there any shadow detail in the women that can be brought out? |

Alan, for me this scene was shot too tight by a fair amount. When I shoot something that is static, I try to frame shoot, then back off or zoom out and shoot again.... so I have room to change my mind later. I usually shoot a scene both horizontally and vertically. |

Beautiful, Nice setup. You might try bringing up the shadow detail in the main splash and cloning in a few more droplets. Good add at the bottom. |

The simple answer is, I use a standard crop ratio of 11x14 or 8x10 (for 16x20). When I present at camera club, participate in shows or sell prints I use precut mats.
The aesthetic answer is, I don't like equal spacing around a central object. For me, the right side crop, breaks the symmetry and adds a little tension to an otherwise placid, peaceful scene. It also pushes the road over closer the the right side third. For me close to the the rule of thirds is better than right on.
When I hung this image in my living-room, I cut a custom mat and used the full frame. After showing it cropped to 11x14 I liked it better and changed the pic on my wall. |
