Thanks Nelson, I agree, more off the bottom would help. |

Thanks Jessica, I think the late afternoon light was only lighting up the top and one side. I did bring up the shadows a bit on the bottom edges and the right side. I was concerned that more brightness would reveal that those area were not as sharp as the others that are brighter. I was fairly close to the flower, so that f 5.6 gave me a pretty narrow DOF. |

Opals are such beautiful gems. Makes a nice subject but for sure, shinny objects are tricky to shoot. I think that the aperture of f3 didn't do justice to the beauty of the stone. Since you were on a tripod, you could probably give yourself more DOF, by using f8 or even 11. I know this would add a need for more light, or at least a longer exposure but the stones not moving, so what the heck. Be careful mixing light sources, hopefully the 2 lights were about the same color temperature. Size is OK, you may be closer to true macro here but it fits the subject matter.
ps I didn't get the chance to respond to your comment from last month before the page closed down. I have experimented with focus stacking, I have a Oben focusing rail that works well. The problem I have is every time I want to use it outside, there is some kind of breeze which moves my subject just enough to make stacking not practical. I have been such when using this technique indoors. |

Makes a good outdoor still life; yeah the background is a little cluttered and distracting, even though f5 gave you some shallow DOF. The background is also too bright compared the your primary subject. I would suggest cropping off some of the top, dodge/burn to darken background and lighten the bunny and cactus. Depending on what you goal was and what you want to emphasize the most, you could do a severe crop, like below, but depends on much you want the bunny over the cactus. |

What a nice critter capture, he's posing well for you. Things to consider might be to brighten up the left eye a little. And darken the human skin tones so the hand doesn't pull attention away from the Skink. Not sure what f stop you used but it looks like you have good DOF under the chin area, if your software has sliders that allow you break down contrast into small, medium and large adjustments, experimenting with these could bring out some scale details. Barring that maybe brush in some Clarity on the scales to bring the detail. |

Lion fish are so amazing to see and watch. Your treatment works well for emphasizing the fish natural lines and textures. The only suggestion I have is possibly darken the lower left corner, or at least the bright blue spots, they can be a little distracting. |

Nice composition, Cindy. Luv the color contrast between red and blue. The symmetry of the triangle is good but is a little to spread out to my eye, if the blueberry on the left was a little more to the right, and the upper berry was brightened up a little, would be stronger. And maybe reducing the specular highlites on the red berry might reveal some detail, I know this is hard with the bright lites the stores use. Since you were lucky enough to be able to use a tripod, maybe a HDR burst could have given a composite with improved lights and darks. |

Nice capture, I know these guys can move fast when they want to. Glad he gave you time to get a shot in. I know it's hard with the iPhone, not always knowing what f stop the camera is selecting, often for me it's 2.2, etc. which may be to shallow to capture all the details this critter has to offer. I often use the SnapSeed app when I'm with the phone; gives you more control over the camera in the phone. Give it a try, I think you'll like it. I agree with the others, that cropping would be helpful, also, if you selectively brush in some Vibrance just on the crab, would make him stand out more from the background and draw in the viewer. |

Thanks Marcela. Probably f5.6 was not enough to get the whole flower in sharp but I was concentrating so much on the background, forgot about the petals. |

Thanks for the feedback Cindy, for sure some of the white petals were a little blown out. I tried to compensate by dialing in a -1 EV but I guess it was not quite enough. |
