2 Dec 19 Comment Luv your shot. My wife and I have been steam fans since our early riding Colorado narrow-gauge rail. We chased the 4014 from Cheyenne to Medicine Bow on it's inaugural trip this Spring. Dec 13th

60 Dec 19 Reply Although this was in a white 'tent' and I had considered adding a background in post, what I actually did was raise the camera angle to eliminate the white background. The ornament sat on a black foam core which turned more gray due to the lighting. The background dropped off to soft, even at f22, due to my lens being fairly close to the subject. If I were to stick with the white, back part of the tent, in post I would increase the white slider to make sure it was really white (no shades of gray), move photo in layers, add a new layer containing the background I want to change to which is placed under the original photo, then go back and highlight/ select the original photo to make sure its the active layer, then select the Multiply Blend mode. The white areas will 'disappear' and be replaced with whatever is in the layer underneath (say that new background you want to add). Don't know if I explained this well but there are YouTube videos out there that go into it deeper. Dec 27th
60 Dec 19 Reply Thanks Doug, I've done a little focus stacking and want to do more. I like the results, even though sometimes they turn out 'odd'. But I guess the 'slices' to take, the better the results. Dec 16th
60 Dec 19 Comment Never have used a lensbaby....lens but have heard good things about the Velvet 56. It's hard for me to judge where it would be best to place a narrow focus field, it's a subjective call but I agree with Carol that maybe the center of the rose should be the sharp point. So maybe turning the rose counterclockwise a little, laying the focus on the middle and reducing the impact of that curved petal with shadowed blue tint. The cream color of the rose is nice and the blues do, I think reduce the impact of that soft color. Dec 13th
60 Dec 19 Comment Wow, nice work Doug. Brown leaves never looked so good. The shape and texture of the leaves make for great composition. I'm guessing, that since this is No. 24, you experimented a lot with the focus stacking. Was your rail automated, or did you move your adjustments manually? I like the lighting; just enough shadow but yet planting of detail. Dec 13th
60 Dec 19 Comment Nice capture, Bill. The 2.8 aperture is perfect for this shot, and as Carol mentioned, the color is nice. I like that backlighting effect, gives it a nice glow. For sure a vignette would help tone down some of the bright background and pull the viewer more into the center of the flower. I agree that the bottom of the flower and stem could use brightness boost; would give the flower a little more depth. Dec 13th
60 Dec 19 Comment Very nice Carol, I like the textured background and how it blends in to the flower. It's color is also a great match for the butterfly. It's a nice artistic presentation and any remaining softness just blends into the composition. I find it very pleasing to look at. Dec 13th
60 Dec 19 Reply Thanks Carol, that bright area you see is the reflection off the bike 'stand' coming from the light above the tent . It gave me the look I wanted on the seat and handle bars but the unintended consequence was that reflection. Toned it down as much as I could with highlight slider but it was too much. Should have moved that light around, I guess. Lesson learned. I agree, diffraction they say can start as early as f16, lens dependent. It's hard for me to tell the difference between f18 and f22. That would make a good test for a PSA group, or maybe they have done that already. I understand that there are some editing programs that claim they can fix most diffraction as long as they have detailed lens data from the manufacturer. Mmmmmm Dec 13th
