I agree with Jon, the boat in front of the sign has created a busy image. If you shoot these types of photos in the future, you need to start shooting a little earlier to get the nice blue in the sky as opposed to the very dark sky. It will make both shooting and processing much easier. This is a very difficult image to process because of all the dark areas. |

The background has certainly helped, but I find the image a little to busy and I am not sure what to look at.. if that makes sense. |

Reversing the subject helped a lot.. I think I prefer the main image, it is probably the best background of the bunch of iterations. The change I would make to the main would be to increase the exposure on just him. |

Very nice black & white portrait, excellent tonal range and a subject that is very intense. |

My apologies for not including the original, I must have missed it. It does show the difference and a lot of improvement. |

I think it is a great idea of separating him and making him stand out more. I like Jon's idea darkening and desaturating instead of going totally black. |

Interesting.. I usually get comments regarding the sky being overdone, not the opposite. Thank you for commenting! |

Additional notes from Jan:
I removed distractions from the background, converted to monochrome and
placed a texture for added interest. |

The processing does look natural and because of the lack of a center of interest, I would probably change it up a bit. I would probably crop just above the railing, open up the shadows a bit and add some structure to bring out more texture. |

The process is very natural and I would probably remove the wires. Maybe add a little more clarity or contrast for some extra punch. |

Overall the image looks very good and you could crop some off the sky. The only part that came out a little weird is the purple area, middle left where it comes together with some blue. That can probably be easy fixed with the healing brush. The reflections in the water are great and really help the image. |

Overall the image is very nice in regards to tonal range. As Rick suggested, you could try blending in the darkest exposure. Or possibly darken the original even more before you blend. Totally blown highlights are very difficult and sometimes impossible to recover because of the lack of information. |

The composition is very cool, almost panoramic like. The people certainly do add scale and perspective to the image. I might add some additional contrast to the building to see if it helps. |

The location, composition, lighting and processing are very good. Just wish there was someone sitting on the corner, I guess you can't have everything! |
