I did the same thing that Bill (Foy) did and googled Smoke Tree - apparently we do have them here in Oz but I have never seen them - beautiful flower.
I love the hues of this image, soft, pastel and delicate. I like how you have cropped the image, keeping the red leaves as a base to the image as I think this adds to the overall effect and balance. For me the aperture was perfect because I like the soft bokeh effect you have created.
Is that a slight touch of dew on some of those leaves that you captured?
I would like to see the leaves on the far left cloned out - they have beautiful colours but to me they are distracting and they take me away from the subject. I would also like to see the focus on the pink fronds of the flower rather than on the green stems because, for me, that is the main subject. |

Love the repetitive pattern, which for me, creates a good composed image. The B & W treatment works well and makes this image all the more dramatic. I really like the way the full sun hits the grill because to me it makes the highlights in the metal circles contrast well with the black background - very mesmerising. I think you focused on the metal grill which then created a touch of a bokeh effect on the glass emblem, to me this brings my eye back to the wonderful sharpness and pattern of the grill. I think the crop is done well and is balanced. My favourite part of the image is the circular rim of the emblem with the reflection on it - beautiful. You have inspired me to actually look at car grills!

Yes I wish the lower part of the flower was in focus as well! Would have made a much better image. |

The detail in the leaf is superb. My eye first goes to the vibrant red, takes in the green colours and then goes to the dead yellow area. The myriad of textures and colours is mesmerising. I just love the scalloped delicate edge of the leaf - it's as if you captured the seasons on a single tiny leaf. The bokeh effect is also very well handled.
My eye does tend to wander to the dark right hand side of the image and I suggest a softening of the vignette may help keep the focus on the leaf. There is a bright area that catches my attention, which is falling away from the yellow area of the leaf, and I suggest a darkening of that lone tiny green leaf may help keep the eye on the subject. |

The bokeh effect in the background of the image is very well handled. I like how you caught the bug mid way munching on a leaf. Those strong lines on the front leaf are wonderful and I like how the lines then echo gently in the background leaves. The soft green hues of the image contradict well with the orange of the bug which I find interesting. My favourite part of the image is the right antenna - such a dominate distinct line.
The front leaf, appears to me, to be sharper than the bug and I suggest trying to focus on the eye. My line of sight tends to wander to the bright left bottom hand corner of the image and I would suggest a vignette may help keep the focus on the bug. |
