It is an interesting debate and mostly driven by the viewers and Instagram has changed the "rules". With the number of users, their built in filter; there seldom is natural photos in my opinion. What is interesting with Luminar, is the ease of making changes. What would be a several step process to replace a sky in PS can be done with 1-2 clicks in Luminar. |

Beautiful scene, my comments are in line with others. I would have loved to see less water, without the first boat but then more of the cliff. I think that would give a greater dimension / perspective of the scene. |

really great image, spot on! Well focused, sharp and it tells the story well with his expression. We followed a Ocean Kayak Race 3 years ago (The Maraamu Surf Ski) and these shots are not easy, moving target from a moving boat! You did very well with toning the image too, shots on the water can be challenging, easy to over saturate. I am thinking this person is Hawaiian, Samoan or from somewhere in French Polynesia. |

Nice idea, I like the tones of the image and composition. Perhaps the focus should have been on the closer part of the grill VS the middle. The bottom bothers me a bit as it looks too perfect & too flat, result of the fill? If somehow you could curve it? |

Hi Karen, have you ever made puzzles from your photos? What company do you use? |

I like the composition and subject, I have mixed feelings about the background - perhaps as Karen mentions, I would darken the tree a bit and perhaps more shadows. Perhaps as a background, some fog would work better? |

Thank you Karen - I like the silhouette version which was close to how it was but I wanted to show some of the Tahitian design on the bow of the pirogue as it typical. |

Hi Bob,
That is a good question! I normally do not "alter" images I deliver to my clients, I try to deliver "natural" photos that are close to reality of the day. However, I commonly see colleagues adding "filters" and deliver "instagram" type photos, low key, blown highlights etc.. and it appears to work - People like it.
I do my post production work using LR, my editing process includes object removal as no one wants to see a woman in a bikini in the background at a resort during their wedding ceremony, we also remove anything not natural and unpleasant to the eye. We of course adjust all other aspects of the photo but normally do not "alter" it to any other extent.
I think IG has changed the landscape of photography a bit, people are now used to play with apps to enhance photos and thus I we have to follow suit to please our clients. Cheating, ethical or not? I am not sure, I would say not as there is nothing natural about the original image but people are demanding nowadays.
More frequently than ever, we are asked to "thin" people (we already repair sunburn), change the sky because the day of the shooting was overcast etc. With this in mind, we have to respond to the demand and finding the tool that allows these changes in the least amount of time is paramount. While PS has great tools and is the most advanced editor (in my opinion), it remains complex; changing the sky for example is not a simple process. Luminar came up with a layering concept that is incredibly simple and efficient.
The original image here, did not have the rays; as I am just experimenting with Luminar I thought the rays added a dimension to the photos - Is it real, no it is not:-)
We are also now experimenting with composite images created in the water, while the original requires much preparation and time in the water; there is nothing "real" about the photo, the make up is done prost processing (yet using another software), some special effects added but we constantly have to innovate and yes using these tools is like taking a shortcut. |

Beautiful capture. The tone is wonderful, sharp details of the silhouettes. It tells the story of the people watching the sunset very well. Luminar is very interesting, just getting my feet wet with it. |

Hi Bob,
Thank you, you are correct with your assumption. I just started to look into Luminar, there are some nice features which make certain things easier than PS. I particularly like the sky replacement feature which is very useful and easy. Asides from the rays, the image is very close to reality on how the sunset was that day. |
