56 Apr 24 Reply Thank you Martha. I moved here in 1975 and fell in love with the countryside and people. Apr 26th
56 Apr 24 Comment Cindy, I really love the texture and color contrasts within this image. Having a red Cardinal on a b&w is outstanding. The sides of the window are straight north-south and the textures of the brick and wood contrast well with the horizontal and curved brickwork. I think you are finished with this! Apr 25th
56 Apr 24 Comment Martha, your final image is an expression of contrasting shapes and colors. The grass all points up to the sunflower in a supportive role and its coloration sets it off nicely from the other elements. I like what you did with the green foliage background and the swirls within it and the contrasting dark and lighter green channel the eye back to the flower. Now to the flower, its center almost appears to be an eye looking back at you. And the circular motion within it keeps your eye there. Compositionally you have excelled. Apr 25th
56 Apr 24 Comment Kudos, I wouldn't change a thing! The background sets the mood for the flower and the subdued colors tell your story. Apr 25th
56 Apr 24 Comment Pat, this "road hog" is a planter. Rural roads are constructed with crowns so water drains off either side and doesn't collect in the middle, so the lean of the planter to my eye is correct. (Can't tell that I'm a "country boy" can you!) The machinery is in the bottom third of the image and intersects with the right-third vertical. The leading lines of the white fog line and the "V" of the trees focus attention on the planter. Nicely processed! Apr 25th

76 Apr 24 Comment Sophie, a very dramatic b&w image. The sloping line of the performer from lower left to upper right is contrasted nicely with the light beams in the background. I think the black spot Gordon is talking about is a harsh shadow by his head. You can almost make this or that adjustment, but it depends upon what Fiap allows. Compositionally, I wouldn't change a thing! Apr 25th
76 Apr 24 Comment Henriette, I love your choice of infrared for this image. The position of the artwork's treetop is well-positioned and has gaps between it and the skyline. The texture of the grass doesn't bother me your way or Gordon's. The main character stands out nicely and everything else is just background. My only question is if you could have walked slightly to the right to take the photo so the far building in the image would have a gap between it and the treetop. Well done! Apr 25th
76 Apr 24 Comment Hocus pocus! Nicely blended images and very realistic. Can't say anything about how to improve this. Kudos! Apr 25th
76 Apr 24 Comment Jay, there is a lot of texture in this image and I agree with Gordon about a portrait crop that would center the sun in the top third of the image. The sunset colors are wonderful. Was this a handheld shot? The smoothness of the sky contrasts with the coarseness of the water and beach below. If you did use a tripod, a long exposure would give you smooth water and sand and a completely different expressive mood. The size of the sun doesn't bother me as that sunset coloration is wonderful and the main character of this story. Apr 25th
76 Apr 24 Comment Sanford, here in America it's "Where's Waldo?" For me, that Wally or Waldo would be the TV cameraman. Here's an example of repeating shapes and I think your crop enhances the image. Who is that standing woman at the center speaking to - she's a contrarian within the image, facing right instead of left, standing instead of sitting, wearing a black top instead of a colorful one. IMHO the story is THAT woman and I would adjust the shadows to bring her out a tad bit more. Overall, a quality image that captured our attention for a long time! Apr 25th

88 Apr 24 Reply The flag on the barn is part of an agricultural cultural movement that is known as "barn quilts" where designs like a square quilt section are painted on wood and then attached to barns. Apr 28th
88 Apr 24 Comment Brian, what a wonderful opportunity and you took full advantage of it! The tree stands on the left third and the colorful horizon and below comprise the lower horizontal third. The dark starkness of the tree limbs and branches contrasts nicely with the sky and the moon is the cherry on top! The tonal quality of the grasses complements the sunset coloration. Kudos! Apr 25th
88 Apr 24 Comment Quang, a very nice scene to have available to photograph! The first thing that caught my eye is that the Washington Monument leans to the right - check the vertical on it from the point on top to the middle of the base. I don't know how high/low you were able to shoot from this spot, but maybe you could have gotten lower to the ground and gotten a separation between the skyline and the lowest cherry blossom grouping (or can just clone that part of the branch out). With the cloudless blue sky, the branches of the tree with blossoms fill in nicely. With the boaters below, this makes a nice travel image. Apr 25th
88 Apr 24 Comment Charles, very well-processed and your sky replacement works very well. The reflection is wonderful - did you use a polarizer? There is a tension between the bridge and the reflective water. I would suggest darkening the bottom a tad with a gradient so the eye doesn't rest there looking at the rocks below - or crop it 16x9 and get rid of it. The land on both sides provides a "V" to channel the eye to the bridge and beyond. Nicely composed! Apr 25th
88 Apr 24 Comment Brian, there are several directions to go with this image, which is always wonderful. The reflective blue of the sky in the water complements the yellow-brown of the logs and land. The bird stands at the left third and upon the bottom horizontal third. Of course, there are many repeating verticals and if you choose to go with this as your story (as you have) I would suggest doing a little edge patrol and crop out or clone out wood verticals at the bottom left corner and the middle right. The horizontal land and logs contrast with the vertical lines. In this option, the bird is a secondary character in the story. In Option 2 (see below), with a 16x9 crop, you get rid of the top portion out-of-focus area and make the bird the lead character of the story. You still have the repeating verticals and horizontals. Welcome to our group! Apr 25th
88 Apr 24 Comment This image reminds me of Robert Frost's poem "Mending Walls."

"Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast."
And don't forget the most famous line: "Good fences make good neighbors."

The wall is the story and the red barn is no different than the trees - setting the context of where the wall is. The wall creates a "Z" pattern starting at the bottom left and proceeds to the tree line, which connects the eye with trees that lead you to the barn. Well-positioned composition. I like the "juicing" of the tree colors and that you cropped off the sky.

88 Apr 24 Reply Quang, thank you for your comments.
It was a rainy day so the standing corn was wet. Using a zoom, it compressed the corn row segments. What is darker in the foreground versus lighter is actually two separate row segments. As you can see from the corn just in back of the green pasture break, the stalks are darker. But I "see" what you are indicating and I thin I shall lighten a tad. I like the variations of light to dark to light i the bottom of the image.

88 Apr 24 Reply Mark, I use Topaz after I have done the initial RAW processing in LR and PS but before I put in back into LR for the major work. Apr 15th
