Too bad about the power failure Nick--and w/o a/c in this FL heat! We were lucky although many lost power we were spared. Thanks for the suggestion as to the border. And too you did well in increasing the edge between her bonnet and the top. I knew it needed to be done |

John this is one of the best images you have submitted in a while. I looked at her eyes, and one likes to be drawn to them so I find the scrunched up look emphasises her utter look of dismay. Oliver has done well in cutting some of the highlights, partic. in her sweater. Her face could have been a little sharper since her hands seem to be more so than any other part. This should do well in competition. |

my problem is that I hurry too much and therefore don't pay enough attention to the results ....... Oliver, you are singing my song! |

Phil this is so charming, a beautifully natural shot of a lovely child at play. I would like to see the top blurred even more, partic. to get rid of the white object that is a deterent. The flag might be OK, but I would prefer the image without it; I want nothing to take my eye away from the sweet child--she is delightful |

As you know In UK it is common for treats to be sold at intermission but it is not done here in US. So I imagine it would cause wonderment as to why the man is eating ice cream in the theatre. If the orig was not shown then it could have been taken anywhere.
I like the look on his face as he contemplates the ice cream and as usual you have done an excellent job on isolating the couple from the scene. I am not sure about the grain, which could not be helped, but it was wise not to sharpen it further. regardless of whether one likes or dislikes the grain I admire your photographic eye. Well done! |

Oliver I empathise with your sharpening techs. I tend to do the same and too, fail to see the results--until such as Rick has pointed out. But this is something I would like to have taken. (We have Butterfly World here in FL--a marvellous place to photog these beautiful insects). I like the juxtaposition of the flower to the butterfly and the slight blur on the FG petals merely, for me, emphasises the butterfly. Forgive me if you already use this tech. but if not you might want to try David's method of sharpening, he uses it on every (I believe) image; this is what he wrote a couple of years ago:
"Open an image and make a duplicate layer CMD J)
Filter > Other > High Pass.
Set the radius. I have my images 24cm high and for this a radius of 2.5 always seems to work. You could set the radius so that the edges are visible. Much more than this and it all starts to look over sharpened.
Change the blending mode to Overlay.
And that's it.
I often also use a layer mask to select the parts I sharpen. For example, this month's image (The Lady in White) only has the woman sharpened. You can also paint out any slight haloing if it's visible or any noise which is too apparent after sharpening".

Oliver have you ever looked at Nick's other group?

Mohanan Nair who is the admin of the group showed me at the last PSA conference his neat little 3D camera. I believe they all use 3D cameras

Rick I originally thought that this image needs a little sharpening, but then I believe it would take away some of its charm. The water leading to the reflections, to the bridge, to the BG and the clouds--or is it steam rising--all add to making this one I would print and display. Lovely work.
Oliver I do like the enhancement of the reflections and the little bit of blue sky.. |

Nick this is great melding of images. The colours of the rocks are wild, but it doesn't matter since this is a fantasy. I like the addition of the little pool on the RH side. it adds balance and give a triangular composition. Super image, it all works, well done! |

Yes, the cropping is good. I noticed that the chair was not well defined, it has bit sticking up in the back. I can't see a great deal of diff. in the sharpening but then it isn't always so visible on the monitor. Thanks. |
