Nadia, I think this statue is of Jesus. It is buried in the water off the coast of Mexico near Cancun. I like your image as it intensifies the religious theme. Thank you for taking the time to play with it. |

Alan, Thanks for visiting group 41. I love your idea of extending the air bubbles above land. It would definitely take this image in another direction. You've given me a real challenge as this is no easy task. I will see what I can do. |

Nadia, I love what you've done this month. For someone who hasn't seen Kookas, this is a treat. The handling of their placement, lighting, background granular sky, branches and distant birds all make for a pleasing and visually strong image. I have no suggestions for improvement as it is excellent as is. |

Tom, Your image is very inviting with its toned down palette. I like the placement of the bird but it doesn't assert itself as a subject given its small size and similarity in tone to the reflected trees. Not sure if you intend it to be an accent or have more of a presence. The reflected trees are quite compelling but feel a little too similar to the non reflected trees. I wonder if a handling of the "water" needs to be done to sell the reflected tree theme. |

Maria, Thanks, it was fun to work on "painting" different lighting onto the image. |

Peggy, You nailed it. It is very hard to get grown men to directions! I asked them to howl and that's the best they could offer. They actually did howl out loud but that image didn't work as well as this one. |

Bruce, Thank you for the suggestion. I do not have a sense of how the judges look at titles so it is helpful hearing your perspective. |

Alan, Yes, they liked the image. They were good sports posing for the image especially since they didn't know what I was up to. |

Alan, I had a few reactions to this compelling image. First of all, the grey sky feels similar to many of your images in which you have clowns balancing etc and I think this type of image is asking for a bleak sky with ominous clouds or something more grounded in "reality". Likewise the baby, although compelling as another point of despair, feels a little surreal in its placement, size, and bleached out handling.

Bruce, I want to extend a warm welcome as well. Your first image is quite compelling and shows your command of both photoshop and your artistry. Your handling of composition, color, tonal range and lighting are all of an exceptional level. I look forward to seeing more of your creations and learning from you. |

Maria, As with the comments of the others in the group this image draws me in. Your handling of lighting and tonal range is exquisite. I have no suggestions as I like the final product as is. |

Kirsti, I feel late to the party with my comments. On my initial viewing without reading others comments I felt the image was a bit flat and removed some of the richness of the original. Kirsti's handling brought back some of the darker richness that I was wishing for. It's a challenging lighting dilemma as the bird is being viewed back lit. I wonder if you could work in the darker tones and lighten the queen more (taking artistic license). With respect to the other bird placement, I like your handling with the offset three birds and like the extended background version to create balance.
I am finding decisions about tone, contrast, cropping, etc. are very personal and ultimately are the decision of the artist as you can create many different moods with variations on a theme. Overall I very much like this image and encourage you to tweak it till you are satisfied. |

Peggy, Your image this month reminds me of many landscapes I've played with adding birds to bring a subject to the image. I have a few reactions, mostly projections of my own challenges with these types of explorations. The original 2 is a spectacular image and stunning on its own. I like how you've added some of the tonal hues to the bird but also considered making the bird more white to enhance its prominence as the subject of the image, somewhere in the territory of where Bruce was heading. I might even explore a more bright white theme for the bird.
My wife often will look at an image I'm working on and ask "you getting desperate adding a bird again?" It does get me thinking about what my intention is. There is something else calling to me with your image and many of these types of images. I don't have the answer at present but I will be thinking more about this and may return to this subject later in the month.
Bottom line, it's an excellent image which works well as it is. |
