Thanks for your comments. I'm having a little difficulty visualizing exactly what a stroke would look like. I'm not familiar with the term. Could you explain a bit more about how to create a stroke. I have some ideas about how to lighten up the left side of the photo, but would like to hear more about your specific suggestion. |

Glad to see another admirer of the darker photo. It seems to me that the lower exposure allows the viewer look more deeply into the composition and is also a good way to express a more somber mood. Thanks for you comments |

Thank you for your comments Hattie.
I too was a little ambivalent about the crop. I finally ended up with a compromise between emphasizing the couple and the shadow and light from the large darkened room. |

Beautiful shot! It was certainly worth climb. Nicely composed; enhancing the detail, especially in the tea fields really makes the image pop. The haze and clouds in the background create a wonderful dreamy mood. This may be controversial, but I feel the wires in the photo add nothing and are in fact a major distraction to an otherwise perfect shot. You might want to consider removing them. My local camera club does not allow object to be altered in the Travel category, but in the open category it is perfectly acceptable.

Thanks David,
I think high contrast seems to help monochrome photos pop, especially if they are a little dull to begin with. |

Thanks Oliver; You are right about the monochrome vs. color. The original color photo almost looks like a monochrome. |

David,
I really like your photo's composition. There is a nice sense of depth and the photo tells a nice story. The shadows are a nice touch too. You are right about the limitations of jpeg, but because the sky is pretty burnt out this might be a good photo to consider replacing the sky or just reducing the exposure a bit to darken the sky. You could use Lightroom's graduated filter to the darken the sky a bit and the radial filter to bring up the exposure in the subject. You might have noticed that I'm into the dark and moody look, but I think it would work with your photo. |

Hi Hattie,
I really like the idea of your photo. You've been able to capture the spontaneity of the moment. These kind of shots are always challenging. You've done a pretty good job of toning down the blue reflection from the door. Sometimes playing around with the luminance and saturation sliders in the HSL mode of Lightroom with the color image can help to increase the contrast between the various parts of the image. You might also think about using a Lightroom de hazing preset to reduce the glare of the door reflection. Another trick, since you have NIK is to go to Color Efex Pro and try the darken/lighten center effect. It works like a subtle vignette that can serve to redirect the light to the area you want the viewer to focus on. |

A very creative shot LuAnn. Monochrome certainly does work better here. Shooting down on you subject is a nice touch, but what I really think sets this photo apart is seeing all of the subjects looking off toward the left side of the frame. It makes the viewer curious about the subject of their attention; very thought provoking. You've manged to create a subtle sense of tension and mystery in you photo. I wonder if a vignette might help the viewer focus a little more tightly on the group? Well done!

Your subjects are very unique. There is lots of detail that adds to the interest in the photo. To me what really makes this photo stand out are the expressions on their faces and the overall affect they project. They appear to be very relaxed and comfortable being photographed. You seem to have the knack for getting your subject to exude as sense of genuineness and honesty that really takes this photo to another level. Well done. |
