An interesting image and I enjoy how you are always experimenting with different concepts. I like the diagonal line of the subject, but to me, the final image is too dark and lacks separation from the background. |

Janice, Can you try re-posting your edit? It seems to be too small.

Thanks for sharing the link to the Sam Abel video. I watch it and thought it was great.
I too find dogwoods irresistible. I like the concept of placing a frame within the frame and I also like the diagonal of the fence and its vertical lines with the tree trunk shadows. In my opinion the scene is a little too busy. Did you consider a different crop of this image? My eye is drawn to the curved dogwood on the right that frames the segment of the fence with the shadows. I am attaching a crop of that section for your review. What do you think? Does it convey anything you saw in the original image? |

Thanks for the feedback Janice. I feel very lucky to have cardinals regularly in my backyard. Although I haven't seen it, I suspect there is a nest nearby, because he and the Mrs. are regulars.
Even though shot with a 600mm lens, the cardinal was still very small in the original image.I suspect at least part of the noise was caused during post when I tried sharpening the bird and softening the background and then I resized the image.
I was shooting in manual mode and chose the higher ISO and shutter speed because he was moving around in the shaded area. I probably should have opened up the aperture at least one stop and I could have cut my ISO in half.
I did try to get a different POV, but he took off before I could get a better angle.

I like the colors, depth of field, cropping and sharpness of this image. I think you have a very strong composition and I like the angles and lines you have used.
In my opinion, this is an excellent image. |
