Arne, to my eye it appears that the post processing on the sky created a lighter area in the transition between the sky and ridge line. It seemed most visible in the area just to the right of the sun and in the upper right of the image. I have experienced this in moving sliders in LR and processing for more detail in NIK Color Effex Pro. I find it a real pain to correct unless you do something like luminosity masking which is also time consuming (for me anyway). It does not seem to bother some judges so good luck in your competition. |

I agree the composition and lighting pulls my eye through the picture to the mountains on the horizon. I think you got the correct exposure (white snow, accurate grasses) and I liked your choice of depth of field and sharpness. To my eye, the dark sky appears heavy and almost a distraction to the image. I would consider doing everything I could to bring some texture out of the sky or worst case, just lightening it a bit, especially close to the mountains. |

To me this is a very pleasing pastel image, and I like what you did with the colors and capturing the effect of the side lighting on the cliffs. It appears it is always difficult to capture the grandeur of the Grand Canyon and I think you did it well with the composition you chose. For me, the haze adds depth and dimension to the image so I am glad you didn't go too far with dehaze. To my eye, the horizon does not quite look level, but that may just be me. If you had a chance to redo, I would consider capturing the image a bit earlier so you would have more lighting on the cliffs and if possible, moving to get more of the river in the image. Of course that may put you in Wiley Coyote territory (if you are old enough to appreciate that)... |

I like the elements of composition of this image - the "V" shapes of the hills and the way they nestle the setting sun and the layers of the hills forming the base of the image. I think your crop at the top and side was appropriate and warming the image works for me. I think you pulled just the right amount of detail out of the shadows. You can tell it is getting dark but still make out the foreground. My consideration would be to reduce the effect of post processing (lighter tones) on the ridge lines if you were to consider using this for competition purposes. |

I like that this image was a real eye exerciser - there was a lot to look at an appreciate. I thought that the bush near the pond, the red line of flowers in the background and the end of the walkway on the upper right just added interest to the image. I liked the composition - where the fountain was placed which was balanced for me by the swirls in the water. I would consider a darker vignette around the image to take some brightness out of the sides and the trees at the top. |
