Thanks Lamar. Indeed, I have been very careful in replacing the sky. The new Sky Replacement tool in PS is far superior than its competitor. |

Todd, thank you. You recognize my effort to avoid blown out city light (that normally happened) and also the sky replacement. Unfortunately, I did not submit this image for recent Citi life Salon in Indonesia. |

To me, the impact of this image is the stars. You successfully draw your viewers attention by placing bright stars on dark sky. However, as a viewer my eyes demand some more to see. I faced the same situations when editing my Aurora images.
My next target to please my viewer eyes was the tree silhouettes. I know it is impossible to get sharp tree silhouettes at this long exposure. I was looking for ways on how to create edges on my blurry tree silhouettes. I found the easiest and most effective way is as explained in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=3qtG8DGMBH4 . I did not make it all sharp just partially to make it look natural.
Awesome shot and I love to hear story of your effort to make this image.

I agree with Lamar. This a strong story telling image. I think you positioned the skull in a right place for the composition. I am currently following an on-line PSA class Creating Images for Competition. One technique that I learn here is that our main subject become more outstanding by making its surrounding less sharp and less saturate. In this case, I might want to make the cracks less sharp (just a bit) and desaturate this ground (again, just a bit) to make the skull and horns more outstanding. I would then sharpens the skull and horns (just a bit) to make the overall look more stunning. Excellent shooting Kathryn! |

I agree with all of our friends comments here. What I like so much is the mood. The ambience and balance of the whole scene. Excellent shot San! |

Hi Todd,
The most significant impact of this image, to me, is the color combination. The maker must have apply complementary color concept effectively here. Second, this is also an effective demonstration of excellent focus stacking technique. Job well done Todd. |

Pierre,
Let me response straight to the point you want to discuss. Like you, I always shot this kind of scene with bracketed exposure. You combined 5 bracketed in LR. I would normally combine it as layers in PS. Most likely, I will choose the one that I think is the best as my base layer. I would then choose and pick other part of the image by using Mask Tool. In some situation, I use Luminosity Mask. I really appreciate your efforts to capture this image. |

Hi Lamar,
Another viewer 'might' think the messy foreground is distracting. But not me! This a nice story telling image. The focus is sharp from foreground, mid ground and background. F/11 with 17 mm focal length is the right choice. The post processing is just right. Not overdone. If you feel like to submit this image for Salon, this is suitable for the Category of Journalism Photo. Great job Lamar! |
