15 Dec 23 Reply Randall, I agree that taking the photo at the golden hour does a lot to reduce harsh shadows at mid-day. It is too difficult to ask a flying cormorant to hold still while you set up your fill-flash. Jim Dec 12th
15 Dec 23 Comment Randall, You have a great photo of the double crested cormorant in flight. I love a good challenge and this is very challenging. In Photoshop, I used the magic wand to select only the darkest shadow. In camera raw I lightened the shadows as far as I could and darkened the highlights. This make the shadow light, but bluish. I did the magic wand again, increased the temperature to make it warm brown. I readjusted the exposure of the entire photo and got this. Jim Dec 12th
15 Dec 23 Comment Sarita, thank you for the suggestion of LR Denoise. I don't use Lightroom because I am more familiar with Photoshop. I'll check it out. Jim Dec 10th
15 Dec 23 Reply Please give the details to "Using several of the adjustment/masking brushes in ACR." I like your results. Jim Dec 3rd
15 Dec 23 Comment Mike, this is an outstanding close-up photo. I have gone out with a friend on a pheasant shoot and I know there's a moment when a pheasant goes from absolutely still to being flushed out. It's very hard to sneak up on a pheasant. What lens did you use?
You got a good bokeh behind and very sharp on the bird. Jim

15 Dec 23 Comment Isaac, you have a great photo of the owlets. I am fascinated with the colors that come out in the eyes of the owlet on the left which gives a rich purple retina and yellow sclera.
Like Randall, I would like to see the original of the owlets.

15 Dec 23 Reply Isaac, I agree with your comment about being soft. Look at my reply to Randall. I think the cardinal was shaking of food from eating a berry and may have blurred the beak and head.
I did clone out the inner part of the berry still on the beak. Jim

15 Dec 23 Reply Randall, if you look at the original, you'll see that there are particles of food on the beak. Even at 1/8000 seconds there may have been some motion on the beak from shaking food off. Jim Dec 3rd
15 Dec 23 Reply Thank you, Kathy. I like Isaac's crop to show off the parallel branches. Jim Dec 3rd
15 Dec 23 Reply Isaac, I agree with you about the crop, especially because the cardinal is looking to the left, leaving unused space on the right side. Jim Dec 3rd
