Connie, Thanks!
I do know a bit about the tools, so they are rarely in my mind. (At the same time, I do try to learn more and more about them all the time.) Generally, the experimenting that goes on for me is mostly about what images to combine, the color choices, the lighting, and mostly about how to make things come together. |

In my view, if there's some totally black areas on the EDGE of the image, and the image will be shown on a black background (black behind the image), add a small stroke on the outside to define the image edge. |

This is a nice conversion, but without a stroke on the outside, it's difficult to know where the image ends.
To my eye, the sharpest, brightest parts are the ends of the petals, which leave me wanting more. Therefore, I would work to better emphasize the flower center, or to de-emphasize the petal ends. |

This is a sweet image, especially since the horses look so little and the snow adds mood. I personally do not find the border to be a plus, so I offer another option. It was taken from NIK Silver FX workup and then just masked to show the border.
I find it's often problematic to start with a photo that is soft, like this one. I worked to sharpen the eye, and removed the snowflake near the eye, to help the viewer better appreciate the red horse. I also lightened the background a bit. |

I too am happy to see you back with us and to see your work.
To me, this image is more art than photography. I love all the vibrant colors and the ideas. I think it would make for a great card / party invite. I'm thinking a little turquoise coloring in the bottom right quadrant would add some nice color balance. |

I too love this sorts of landscape. To me, your image cries out for a 3-5 exposure HDR, which would have helped bring out the sky and the barn. I really would like to see more pop. After the fact, processing a single image with an HDR program is an option. I use Photomatix Pro here, and then in PS added a bit of saturation, and levels (selectively applied to the sky).
