Mary, I really like what you've done here. In particular, the face and ALL the hands being in the same color range. And it is super that the two girls have similar brown, wide-open eyes. I also like the model's freckles and her Mona Lisa look. I agree the tattoo is distracting, so you did well to make it disappear.
As for improvements, I think the ring at the top is perhaps a tad too shiny. and the hand at the right bottom seems a little too bright. If it were my photo, I would work on the fingernails of the hand over the mouth - shine them up a tad and make them look less bitten. |

Karen - what a great photo! There is a lot to like: Hayden's staring at the camera with such an uncertain-expression; and (such a find) that interesting old yellow piano on wheels. Leaves me wondering about what is the story, which I like.
You didn't write about how you converted to B&W, but I think this is an area for improvement. The blacks in the hair seem to have lost all detail / tonal range, and the pedals on the piano are quite black (drawing my eye), when they could be more invisible in a mid-grey. Also, I find the white vertical (on the right side of the piano) distracting. You did well to get the metal of the chair toned down some, and I like the darkness on the floor tiles since it encourages some looking around the image. A little cloning away of the peeling paint on the left side of the paino is an option. One additional thought, I quite like the yellow of the piano, and might add just a little color back by stacking the original image in "color" blend mode at low opacity on top of the B&W, with some masking if desired..

How fortunate to be out there with the glaciers… and what an interesting capture, Well done to get all those grey tones. The addition/ emphasis of color definitely catches the eye, while making me wonder what is this? Looks a bit like I imagine a macro of a pitted tooth might appear. I personally think the colors are too strong, especially in the sky which was such a nice shade of blue. The processing appears to have blurred the upper edges, but maybe that add some depth. Just needs a bear to give it scale…

Jim, I do think the light is very interesting, and I agree that good light is something special to look for, especially as it can really add drama to a subject or a story. Unfortunately, in this instance it doesn't work for me, perhaps in part because I feel the photo is neither a portrait nor a street photo, so I find the lighting confusing. The light on her arm and on just one of her boobs draw my eye, but I ask myself why? And why the handbag and newspaper? To improve, I'd consider making this a portrait, with a crop right above her boobs, and then adding some lighting and reddening to her lips.…

So often we photographers see something that we want to photograph... Just some minor points - the white spot on the right could be cloned away or darkened, and the bit to reflection on the left as well. You might consider cropping away some from the bottom…

Georgianne, I see a theme in your images… This one works quite well. I like how you focused on the nest's sharp center with its vibrant color, and minimized the rest with the texture. And I like how the hints of light around the flower add interest to the overall image. As for improvement, I think the light green area at the front right side of the flower could be toned down.
By the way; years ago I created an action for stamp up / stamp visible. It sits at the top of my action palette, which is always open. I use it a lot. |

Thanks Georgianne. The ring at the girls' feet is some shallow water that they were standing in. I do plan to rework this image one of these days -- I think I purposely blurred the edges and sides in LR to keep the focus on the girls, but perhaps that's not needed.
