Steven - my goal was to use a narrow depth of field so that the pattern in the pot dominated the image and the shape of the pot melted into the negative background. Unfortunately I didn't take the same photo with a larger depth of field so I don't really know how successful it is. It kind of reminds me of a quote I read yesterday that went something like this: "A good photo is like a good joke, if you have to explain it, it isn't good." |

I can't be sure since it wasn't my topic but when using bokeh in a photo I tend to think of an image where there is a well focussed area in juxtaposition to an out of focus area where the out of focus area helps direct the viewers attention to what is in focus. I think this photo is more about an image that is overexposed in some areas and under exposed in the middle. |

I really love the detailed structure of the surface of the in-focus olives and I don't think it would have been as prominent without out of focus background. Good application of the narrow depth of field technique. |

Simple yet fun to look at. The bokeh area is so pronounced that it actually becomes an area of interest for the image. Interesting shot. |

Great use of bokeh to make the hummingbird pop. Also a great composition and much more interesting than most hummingbird photos. |

I have never heard of a circular bokeh effect in a lens, but it clearly adds another dimension to the out of focus region. I think this is an interesting effect. |

Perfect use of bokeh to emphasize the flower over the stem and background. I love the way that the bokeh quality of the blue flowers in the background created a sort of pillow effect from what might be hydrangeas. If the hydrangeas had been in focus there would have been too much detail to distract from the subject. |
