Thank you all for your comments. I apologize for not replying sooner, but it's been a bit busy lately and we are still on the road. I will be trying all your suggestions because this is one of my favorite images of the year. |

I'll be the odd man out - for me, the frame and little bit of wall provide context and are not distracting. The horizon in the middle of the frame makes me pause a moment longer to figure out what is happening in the image (a good think, I think). The colors are spectacular, but realistic. Good job. |

Thank you for your comments, Michele.
The dragon is the main subject with the Milky Way as a secondary subject. This is a stacked image of multiple photographs - the stars are soft because the shutter was just a little bit long. That was an intentional choice to make sure the stars would actually show up despite all the light pollution from Borrego Springs (the bright lights in the middle) and San Diego (the green air glow on the right). They're also a little soft from the noise reduction. |

I agree with Tom that this is a very nice blue-hour landscape with human interest, even if you don't know the story behind it. I think the lighting is near perfect and find that the light on the street draws my eyes into the center of the frame.
I also agree with Tom about the sign on the left and I think I would try to extend the light from the street to the cars and people at the fence to bring more attention to them.
Good story and nice photo! |

I thought about you when we were in the hill country this past month and wondered how close we were to you. That aside, this is a very nice image. I really like Nigel's crop. |

As someone who frequently has only 15 or 30 minutes to record a scene, I've learned to value those that don't fall into the "right" times for spectacular light. In this image, I particularly like the light and shadow on the lighthouse. I also like the leading line of the beach and the composition.
The luminance of the beach is a bit distracting to me. You might try darkening it down (I'd try about -20 or -30 on exposure and -10 on highlights) and then using a brush to add a little golden highlight right along the edge of the water all the way to the lighthouse. If I were not going to enter it in the Travel division, I'd be tempted to add a little golden highlight in the sunny part of the lighthouse and the beach right in front of the lighthouse. |

Thanks for the wonderful comments!
There are a combination of light sources. The brightest lights under the dragon's head come from Borrego Springs and the green glow is from San Diego (about 45 miles away). The light on the dragon was light painting with a simple hand held flashlight, then bringing detail out of the shadows in Lightroom. |
