Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
4 Jan 18 Comment Thanks to everybody for your comments on my photo this month! It was a lot of fun! I look forward to next month! Jan 21st
4 Jan 18 Comment The more I look at this image I took for this month and the more I think that this might be a "moustache" photo for me. Let me explain. When I was younger, I once grew a "moustache" and hated how it looked however people around me noticed it and commented on how I looked better with it. So for a while, I wore a "moustache" simply because people around me liked it. Although this photo is not a favorite of mine, people that follow me said they loved it overwhelmingly and so it was one of the photos that I presented. The "revised" photo however might be a bit more visually interesting in my opinion. Jan 17th
4 Jan 18 Reply Thanks Ian for the tips on my image! I think the improvements that you made look quite amazing! I really enjoyed learning what you did to enhance my image! Thanks very much!! Jan 17th
4 Jan 18 Reply Thank you Joseph for the comment! I don't like getting out in the snow anymore after I fractured my ankle badly last year before Christmas and spend one week in the hospital and 3 weeks in the rest home doing rehabilitation. It happened all because I tripped sideways over a very low-cut tree stump that I couldn't see under the snow. This year, I am VERY hesitant about going anywhere when the weather is bad. Jan 11th
4 Jan 18 Comment Magnificent landscape shot. The repetition of lines in the water and the sand really work to form a great composition. Putting the people in there was a great bit of quick thinking. The focus is done nicely as is the color. Jan 11th
4 Jan 18 Comment I applaud your use of creativity and color in this shot! Personally I like this photo as an excellent abstract image. The colors are definitely mind-bending to me! It's interesting how the various colors seem to morph into each other.

So I'm a bit fuzzy on this technique which I've never seen before. Is there a name that it goes by? What makes the orange and green colors in the background?

4 Jan 18 Comment What depth there is to this photo! I like the bells in the tower silhouetted by the pale colors in the sky and the bright countryside down below. To me, the rule of odds is represented in this photograph by the windows and the grouping of the bells. I also like being able to see all the way out onto the countryside far off into the distance.

I have no improvements to add to this photo.

4 Jan 18 Comment Really an amazing photo. The capture was perfectly timed! The colors of the bird are beautiful and the clarity of the twig is magnificent. Jan 7th
4 Jan 18 Comment Really an outstanding image with great clarity and perfect color! The reflections are astonishing in the detail. The sky and the clouds look amazing! The sky looks a tad different around the red thing in the air on the right of the building but that might be my monitor. Someday when I grow up, I want to take photos like this! Jan 5th
4 Jan 18 Comment I'll soon be joining this digital image group and was going through looking at the photos for this month. This photo struck me once I saw it! The blowing snow and the colors are done very well considering that it was a blizzard outside. Further the clarity of the picture works nicely as well. I'm curious to find out if you used a tripod for this and what your settings were on your camera.

I'm still unsure whether the little house on the left looks good in the picture. On the other hand, I think it looks good as visual interest leading into the photo.

12 Jan 18 Reply Thats interesting Carole but how much different is it than the modification I posted back on 01/02/2018? It looks similar to me. Jan 29th
12 Jan 18 Reply I really like this photo Connie! I like the smoke effect because it kind of looks like breath on a cold winter day coming out of the car's mouth. Really nice focus on the composition! Good creativity! It's always good to have fun with the post-processing! Jan 17th
12 Jan 18 Reply Thanks Barbara. I'd be interested in seeing a version of how you would do the slightly lighter background. I actually had white and a friend of mine suggested a more "festive" background however the image inside of the globe is very grey and dark. When I did this image on a white background, it didn't look as interesting because the white overpowered the globe and the image inside. The grey and the shadows currently help blend the image with the surroundings I think. However I'd still like to see what your version might look like if you have time sometime. Jan 15th
12 Jan 18 Comment I just wanted to let everyone know that it was nice being in your group but I'll be switching to a new group at the end of this month (January). I hope that you'll come say HI to me every now and then over in Group 4 :) Jan 7th
12 Jan 18 Comment Such an amazing landscape shot! I love ice shots and have seen them done before in a book that I was reading by another photographer. The scenery has been captured nicely and the color of the ice sets it off nicely. I like to see the different textures that play against each other in the photograph.

To me, I feel that the ice edges and the water and the background blend in to freely with each other (they seem a bit 2-D). I might consider different ways to showcase that brilliant piece of ice of which there are many.

12 Jan 18 Comment Interesting photo Walter. I don't have anything like that where I am for weather for sure! Really great clarity on this shot! Excellent detail from the grass to the gazebo to the trees! As was said previously, the path leading to the gazebo is a perfect use of composition.

I know that it's sunny in the photo but perhaps consider raising the color temperature a bit to warm it up and increase the vibrance to bring out the color even more in the trees and the grass! Also I would have considered cropping out the pole on the right.

12 Jan 18 Comment I really like this photo! Not only for the textures that are in it but for the extra creativity that you included when you observed and shot the photo. They really do look like "dragon's teeth". Very interesting composition and it focuses the viewer's eyes more towards the ice by darkening the shadows.

I'm torn whether a closer crop should be applied from above because I'm not sure whether the top grill is distracting enough or not however you might consider clone stamping out the big ice chunk. It might take a little bit of time but I feel it would be well worth it in the end.

Really amazing eye to have caught this! This is similar to the "I SEE FACES" challenge that people like to do every now and then where you take photos of "faces" that you see in ordinary objects! Great fun!

12 Jan 18 Comment Great focus on an almost impossible subject! The clarity is done exceptionally well and the subject shows up nicely against the black background.

It's interesting to me how you got that shot with an f/11 whereas I thought you would have to at least do an f/22 for something like this.

There is a slight green tint around the edge of the moon but I'm not sure what is causing that...whether that is as a result of processing or the photo itself.

This really is a magnificent image though!

12 Jan 18 Reply Thank you Connie :) There is a small mistake that I don't like about the photo (other than the rectangle) but it's so minor that people probably won't care anyway. I am really happy I finally was able to create a "snow globe" image. I've tried doing this since last year with different variations and not much success. I like the 2nd one though with the snow where it fills the bottom of the globe more and the snow isn't "moving". You can see movement blur on some flakes in the original picture which would be okay if it was a real photo but not if it's in a small glass globe. Jan 5th
12 Jan 18 Comment Kerstin,
It's interesting what you did with your photos in trying to tell a story. I really enjoyed the story that you told with the snow in the first picture and the assortment of snow equipment in the second. I feel that the first picture shows a great visual composition with the cars lined up and the lines in the snow leading into the distance. I really like the light and how it looks in this photo. I think the contrasting textures in the second image are very visually interesting.

Perhaps cropping more on the cars themselves and the lines in the snow would lead to a more visually stunning image eliminating some of the extraneous elements. I would have tried to get the shot closer to the ground itself if that was available. The second image needs a bit more cleanup in the upper left corner (shooting closer to the subject or zooming in will help eliminate this) and maybe think about how the boots themselves could be lightened somewhat so that some texture detail could be recovered. Perhaps a light vignette around the corners would help force peoples eye's towards the central composition.

12 Jan 18 Comment This is a brilliant photo Carole and it has a lot of good things going for it! I really like the vibrance of the colors as well as the different textures that can be seen. I feel that the depth of field was done perfectly! It makes me want to reach out and touch the flower. I especially like the creativity that you chose to incorporate in this image with the frame which matched the color of the flower. To me, the varying shade of that color in the frame is something which captures the viewer's eyes and allows them to linger within the boundaries of the image.

You might consider bringing down the highlight detail as the texture of the snow on top of the flower is missing and the highlight detail seems to be clipped. You might also consider dodging the lower red portion of the flower to bring some of it up from the shadows. Softening or eliminating the dark black lines in the lower left corner and the upper portion of the photo might help. I feel that the other lines in the background are not as significant visually as the two I mentioned.
