49 Mar 18 Comment Thanks for the comments Alan. I agree with your point. I definitely see this as a 'where's Waldo' picture. For me that's the appeal of the shot. Mar 15th
49 Mar 18 Comment I agree that B&W is a good choice and I see some drama in this shot as a result. Cropping the bottom to remove the most out of focus grass is also a good idea. However, I'm not so clear on what the story is. I guess it could be any of several things like 'Dutiful lifeguards on duty even on cold days' or seeing the watch you children sign .... maybe these are somebody's children just hanging out in the lifeguard's station. I dunno but all this invokes interest making it a nice shot. Thanks for sharing. Mar 15th

49 Mar 18 Comment Yes this is a great shot Fred. It very much appeals to the minimalist instincts in me. I agree with Alan's point about the controversy over centered horizons but I'm firmly on the side of leave it in the center for shots such as this. You have perfect symmetry thanks to the smooth water giving great reflections and, for my eye, that's a very pleasing feature. Of course at my club that doesn't win any favor with the judges. I've seen so many quotes about how composition rules are supposed to be 'broken' but when we do judges complain. Go figure!!! As Alan indicates, go with whichever YOU prefer. All options are good. 49 Mar 18 Comment Yep, this certainly captures the "cold" requirement. I think B&W was a great choice for this topic and I especially like that we can see Justin's face with the white on the end of his nose. Is that snow or just the light? It certainly looks like some snow is getting inside his hood.
This is a great shot, but despite these interesting details here I still find myself wishing I could see the dogs too. Gotta go warm up now. ;)

49 Mar 18 Comment Yes Tom, very nice image especially for hand held at 560mm even at 1/2000th shutter. Like Alan, I'd be interested to know how you got the background so smooth but, I have no suggestions for improving the image. It's great as is, well done! Mar 15th
49 Mar 18 Comment I found this image particularly interesting because I shot a bird of paradise myself the other day at an orchid show put on by the Missouri Botanical Gardens. I was trying to understand why this picture is soft. Too shallow depth of field, too slow on shutter speed or what? I have concluded it must be camera shake. 240mm hand held, while not impossible, is difficult. A higher shutter speed may have helped or perhaps zoom out to 180 or 200mm then crop for composition. I'm afraid Alan's points are correct and for those reasons this shot is not likely to win and prizes in a typical competition. However do not be discouraged JoAnne, the most important thing in a photo, is that it stirs some emotion in the viewer. The natural beauty of this flower certainly comes through. I was also viewing a display of Henri Cartier-Bresson's pictures a couple of days ago and even some of his acclaimed pictures were also soft although with other deeming qualities. Maybe you can find this little bird closer to your home and try again! Thanks for sharing your picture with us. Mar 15th
