I think this is a great shot. I agree it has a kind 'painting' look to it and so much the better for it. I agree with Fred that cropping out the road is a good idea but personally I'd not crop any more from the width. As you said Cora, it would be better had it been tack sharp, in which case I could see this as a 3ft wide print hanging on a wall somewhere. As is it's still a great shot, projects a scene reminiscent of open range days in the old west. (Not that I know anything about that since I grew up in London. But I spent time watching John Wayne movies, and episodes of Rawhide and Gunsmoke. Now I'm an American ;) ) Thanks for sharing this Cora, I luv it! |

Beautiful shot Fred, not a lot one can say to improve it in my opinion.
Knowing you had to work on noise reductions and exposure enhancement in post, shooting at ISO 100 to lower noise and a wider aperture to avoid potential diffraction degradation in the focus but still provided sufficient depth of field and more light might have helped. Of course, if it were me, I'd never have thought of that of that while making the shot.
Some purists might say crop a little of the bottom so the symmetry line is further from the center. Personally, if anything I would crop a little off the top to put the symmetry line exactly in the center. All a matter of personal choice and not really much difference in the final picture. So I say leave it as is, great shot. Well done. |

Tom, this is an amazing shot for hand held at 560mm. Well done. I agree the crop may be a little tight leaving the viewer wanting to see more of the environment but then I think we would find ourselves zooming in to see details of the meal.
I really can't offer anything to improve this shot for my taste. Great job! |

Oh and I meant to mention that since the hoop, court lines and gym floor are all tack sharp the only blur indicates motion. Not too big a deal in my opinion given the other interesting factors. Sorry for the long post! |

In this crop the fourth player's arm is visible under the net and all the distractions a removed. I agree this may be a little too tight but I submit it to illustrate my points. Just how tight one crops in an individual choice. Either way Alan thanks for this shot it invokes all kinds of questions about who's playing defense and who made the shot at the net. Very fun! |

I have tried photographing basketball myself when I had a niece playing for her college. It is tough. Fast motion poor lighting and hard to get a good position from which to shoot.
My first impression was that there a a lot of distractions from the from the key subject which I presume is the ball going in the net. The structure holding is the biggest and then the reflection of the gym lights coming off the floor. So I tried cropping and a slight rotation to help remove the backboard structure). When I did the picture became more interesting. I noticed the are four players involved, three on one team wearing yellow wrist bands and one player under the net. Was he the shooter or a defender waiting for the rebound. Anyway I tried three crops getting successively tighter. See the tightest below: |
