I appreciate your comments and I appreciate the conventions that are espoused for good composition. I think they have their place and I commonly abide by them when they are appropriate. However, they are often applied reflexively. I really like those paintings of medieval life where you have interesting stuff scattered all over the image. People are eating, mice are peaking out a whole, a dog is staring at a cat, children are fighting over something and so forth.

I like this image. Long exposures of moving water have become somewhat of a cliche recently in my view but in this image it is not overdone.

I like the shot and would not change much other than reduce the sky some. I would not crop it as much as Judy. Bringing the top of the image down to just above the tall cloud on the left looks pretty good to me.

I mostly agree with Pierre except I would not crop as much on the left. I would leave the three egrets on the left. If it were my shot I might attempt to take out the white faced calf on the left with content aware fill in addition to the one on the right since neither is adding to the tension provided by the 3 primary cows. There is a horn coming out of the head of the adult white cow on the right which I would try to take out. |

Thanks. The two groups were moderately dynamic so getting a shot with both in an interesting group display was not easy. That was the task that I worked at. The photographer kept moving behind the assistant and flash stands and the girls would get in a huddle to look at a cellphone shot off and on between group poses.
As far as cropping the image goes I agree that some of the sky could be cropped out but I think to much of a crop does not let the characters in the scene breath enough for my taste and style. |
