I too thought at first glance this was a strictly architectural photo. Then after Oliver mentioned there was a second person in the lower half of the image I had to really take a closer look--voilá-- there was a second person!

I like your edit of the photo, Israel, and I like Oliver's. May I suggest to try a third and see if you could lift the shadows so you could make out some of the details in the buildings?

It appears you took this shot from a stairway below. I really like the perspective-taking the shot from down low, and the scale shown between tall buildings and the man down below. I have not done architectural photography before so I don't have more than this to say.

You were in a perfect city to capture this type of architecture.

Best regards,
LuAnn

62 Aug 19 Comment Hello Gary,

This is an excellent photo with a powerful story; I am jealous I didn't capture this shot!! So don't get discouraged Gary, take another look; this is an amazing image (2 photos in 1)!!

After reading Stephen's comments, I have to agree with his discussion on the two versions (with and without the woman in the red coat). Sad lives these folks seem to be living; was the man experiencing a tragedy or just looking at his cell phone. No conversation amongst themselves and even the dog is looking in a different direction--how sad is that. So you have a captivating expression in this photo that really draws the eye in many directions.

For edits, I agree once again with Oliver to remove the boats above the ladies hat, but for the women in the red raincoat, that is your choice either one will work. If you want, you could tone down the bag she is carrying but that is about it for my critique.

Nicely done. Best regards,
LuAnn

62 Aug 19 Comment Hello Julie,

Love this photo! I used to shoot Muay Thai kickboxing fights/tournaments and often wanted to do an HDR fighter like this.

I really like how Oliver edited and brought the light back to the fighters face. Now the catch light in both eyes is good with the left side of his face now having more light. I believe HDR editing is the key to getting this grunge type of photo to pop.

I really like this submission!

62 Aug 19 Comment Hello Hattie,

I love any photo where the impact is because there are people in the scene; well done!

There is definitely a story unfolding in this image. The scene shows where they are (at a place for lunch, maybe). I like the texture of the wooden deck because it lends itself well to a black and white photo. The children stand out from the background so you have depth. You have a definite interest point where I can ponder their expressions.

I do agree with Gary on the crop. My personal preference also is to remove move of the bottom of the photo; perhaps a square crop since the image is vertical.

You talked about wanting to add texture/sharpness to the faces. I do not see that to be necessary. Cartier Bresson images didn't always have tack-sharp focus and they were amazing photographs; I appreciate photos that are not sharp if it contributes to the story. I would caution doing too much to a face especially to a child's face as it can distort and make it look over-processed; try to keep skin natural-looking, that's just my humble opinion.

I also agree, I too like Oliver's edits on the bright spots.

Best regards,

62 Aug 19 Comment Hello Oliver,
I have to agree with everyone else about this photo you did a great job, especially with the black and white conversion. I think the tones on his face look very natural for a young chap.

I do have a comment about the composition and storyline. I could not tell from the photo this was jousting. I had no idea what the boy was doing just that you captured a spectacular pose with accurate tonal qualities. Perhaps an angle that showed more of the scene to help tell the bigger story would have helped me. When I look at the photo I am wondering what he is looking at; is this a play sword or real sword? Is he standing or sitting on a horse, or is he playing with a friend?

Lastly, in my opinion, I would suggest toning down the bokeh a tiny bit. My eye is drawn away on the right side by the brightness of the bokeh. In addition, the shapes of the bokeh seem to really add a bit of chaos to the image so toning the brightness down will help a great deal.

Beautifully done my friend!

Best regards,
LuAnn

62 Aug 19 Comment Thank you very kindly, Oliver!

I agree with your comments and I will work on those points before I print the photo.

I had no expectation that this photo would turn out as it did. It was taken in broad daylight and I was out with friends in the woods walking. They were shooting the waterfalls and I was looking for something different.

Best regards, LuAnn
