This is an amazing shot Hattie! I like the effect of the heat from the burning embers.
When I look at the color shot I really notice the red and yellow in the burning embers. When I look at the black and white that color is missing, obviously. What came to my mind was sometimes you can take a monochrome shot with 1 color in it. You may not be interested in this idea but it is a suggestion. I like how the black and white shot takes some of the chaos away. But I like seeing the embers burning too. It seems to give credence to why the texture of the photo is texturized. I have a setting on my camera that will take black and white photos but only put in a single color like red, for example. It is a very cool and interesting effect.
The other idea I have is to work on the tonality of the two people. Make them more predominant and the background less predominant. I would do some dodging and burning in photoshop. It is a time-consuming process but it can produce so great results. I think that is your only problem with this, and it will help tame the chaos of the background.
Thanks for sharing this shot. |

I like the composition of this shot, Oliver the point of view is very creative. Having the flower in the shot helps tell the story nicely.
I do agree with you Oliver on Gary's crop and tint. I like the bokeh and close-up view of the eyes, and that the detail around the petals on the flower seems softer. I bet this photo would look great in both sepia and monochrome.
Thanks for sharing and inspiring me to try shooting more butterflies from different angles!

You are very kind with your thoughts and comments, Paul thank you! You know what is crazy about shooting action sports like this in a ring is, you don't know what you captured till you go through your shots. I couldn't set up this shot but yes I do know the sport so I try and anticipate the strikes and kicks. That is the part that is exciting for me when I can capture it.
The vignette is a good idea. Those crazy fluorescent lights were a problem. Some were a different color and some brighter than others so I think I use auto ISO.
Kind regards, LuAnn |

Hello Pandula, Lovely portrait, beautiful girl!
My suggests would be to back off a little on the skin softening as I think it borders on unnatural smoothness compared to color shot.
Then if you could open up some of the shadows on the right side of the head that would bring out some details in the hair. The shadow also falls a little too much on her right eye. It looks like you've captured some Rembrandt lighting (triangle under the right eye) one of my favorites and most difficult!
The color shot has a bit more detail in highlights on the hair which would add to the monochrome version as well.
These are very simple edits but will make this beauty a very compelling shot!
Bravo Pandula! |

Nice profile shot, Paul. I have to agree with Gary and Oliver on their suggested edits. The only thing I would add is to bring out some detail in the hair. I read somewhere that Ansel Adams once said the only black in a photo should be the inside of a keyhole. So I would try to lift some detail in the hair. Doesn't have to be a lot.
Do you by any chance have the camera settings? What kind of edits did you do? Does anyone notice a subtle feel of a slow shutter?
Sepia definitely gives it a classic look. |

Thanks, Gary for your thoughts. I have to thank Oliver for telling me about Nix software early on when I joined this group. I normally do my edits in LR and some in PS. I did add grittiness for this as you said it goes with the subject of fighters. Otherwise, I don't use it. I'm not a baseball or football fan but for whatever reason, I love to watch Muay Thai fights - LOL!

Thanks, Oliver for your comments. I agree with the idea of vignette especially to help with that overhead light on the left. I am going down to Iowa for the tournament of champions in October so I will get to take more sports shots. |
