Thanks everyone for your very kind critiques!
My choice to do the blur was based on telling the story of a winning winery. The others did not contribute to the story, "International Cold Climate Wine Winner!", this specific winery. The other corks or vineyards weren't winners of this event. So I opted for a bit of blur to further the story. I seldom use blur so I thought I would give it a go. I am not a Photoshop user much but I am learning things as I go.
Mary, the iris blur is what is creating the phenomena for you I am bet.
Anika, I went with the blur to try to stay with the story, the title of the photo.
Janos, I did drink the wine and it was very light and a little sweet! I think my thoughts above answer your thought on the blur. I do see your point about the top of the bottle in blur. Although, If I was not to blur the bottle neck top I wonder if it would through the rest of the blur off. Then only the top of the bottle would be sharp and the remaining edges would be blurred maybe a catch-22 moment for me.
Thanks for your thoughts they are very helpful.

Thanks Charles for your thoughts. I agree with your comment on the bottle neck in how it should include more of the threading; I see that now. Intersecting with the edge of the frame does stop the eye from moving around the frame. Then it also puts me in a position of finding a better subject for next month. I need to go smaller next time to get into more true macro subjects. I struggle with my camera lens and tiny subjects. Maybe I need to be more patient and use my focus rail and focus stack. I'll see what I can come up with. Thanks for the help! |

Very impressive flower you have here! Love the colors and the back side perspective! Its amazing when something can look so beautiful from the front and the back. You have an excellent capture and the stem being the subject is perfect. I would only suggest brightness. I have uploaded a pic as example.
Kind regards, |

Hello Janos!
Nice idea to play with for a macro. I like the color balance with the green and red. The background is not busy so this gives full attention to the subject. Have you tried to get as close as you can with a feather? You did not specify what lens you are using or its apeture. Some suggestions, if I may,
1. try laying the feather flat and get a nice diagonal perspective,
2. find the rachis (stem) and use it as a leading line in a diagonal with flat feather
3. try a hi-key white background and position the feather on the left or right side (rule of thirds) using a horizontal size. Then photograph the center of the feather like you are taking a portrait. If you cut the top off its ok the center would be a focal point.
You have a nice starting point and what a great subject with many possibilities!
kind regards, |

Hello Anika and welcome to Group 65! I myself am new as well.
Lovely photo you have here. A very pleasing composition, nice diagonal with the frog and leaf on the sinister (upper left to lower right) diagonal. The color balance with the yellow, orange and terra cotta pot go well together. You did accomplish your stated goal of showing structure of the flower and the bead frog with nice clarity.
If I could suggest anything, I would opt for a complimentary color for the background to help the flower pop as a subject. I have attempted to try a shade of blue as it is the complimentary color for yellow. Blue also balances the image as it is a cool color with yellow being on the warm side. |
