I sincerely apologize Sherry, if my comment about the fence offended you. That is the last thing I would intend. One important thing about our craft of photography is its subjectivity, we all see things very differently. I fully agree and appreciate that our memories play a very important role. Our experience and knowledge grow every time we pick up our camera and of course post processing then takes everything to another level. Again Sherry, I am very sorry if I have caused any offence. |

Thanks for your comments Sherry. Our harbour at this point is at least half a mile across, so keeping the verticals straight is no real problem. I also took a series of images with the intention of stitching them together. Watch this space. |

A great use of the stitching technique to show the vastness of this location. The lighting provides mood as does the storm clouds. I'm not sure how you could do it in processing, but I would like to see the mountains a bit stronger, a bit more in my face. Just thinking out loud. |

A great night time city scape Peter. Your use of slower shutter speed and panning bring life and vitality to this image. Various festivals are common to cities the world over and always generate interest to spectators and viewers alike. I don't particularly mind the head in the lower left, he or she was also there to enjoy the festival. A strong image with lots of story and interest. |

I love the colours in the foliage and the textures in the mill. The best camera at any given moment is the one we have in our hands. And our skills improve with time and practice. While this is a pleasing image Sherry, I will very politely and respectfully play devil's advocate and ask the obvious question. Is that fence line necessary or is this image improved if it's cropped out? |

A fine image Dhananjay. Yes, I agree with Sherry and yourself about the burnt out sun. My post processing skills are very lacking, so I try to get the best image I can at the time of capture. Maybe next time you are faced with these lighting conditions, why not try under-exposing the shot, quite dramatically. The boats are already in silhouette, so you will not loose any further detail, the sky, sun and even water surface with darken to a rich golden brown. You can then always brighten it back up to suit your taste. Speaking of the water, a possible alternate to this one might be a pano. Water is water and I feel if you crop off the bottom half of the water, you won't loose anything of essential importance in the image. |

Thanks for your comments Gordon. Convergence is unavoidable when this close to the base of the bridge, so it must be used to effect. As I mentioned to Sophie, the whole purpose of this night, for me, was to play with long exposures capturing the moving clouds in the last of a dying sunset and smoothing the water surface. |

Thanks for your comments Trey, I hadn't noticed the water in the lower left. That's curious because obviously, the 25 second shutter speed applies to the whole image evenly. I'm not quite sure what you mean by making the yellow bridge pillar one of my north-south poles??? |

Thank you Sophie, the whole purpose of this night out was to capture the moving clouds and some of the dying sunset colours, while also smoothing the water surface with a long exposure. |

Thanks for your comments Jay. I've wanted to shoot the sunset from this location for quite some time now. Just in case you are interested, there's another very similar image taken from the eastern side of the bridge in group 73. |

Another superb performance image Sophie. Yes, when shooting in this environment, we are all subject to the actions of the lighting technicians. They are there for the performers and production, not us photographers. We just go along for the ride. Your capture method was and is perfect. When things change as rapidly and constantly as they do here, I think it's best to let our camera's computers do what they were made to do, and we just focus or composition. Colour versus black and white? There is no contest here, B&W enthusiasts will choose the b&w, while the colour lovers will choose the colour. Personally, as a "photographer", I enjoy them both. Your exposure is excellent for both, the colours and the tones are very well handled in each of these images. Congratulations. |

Removing that lens flare in the bottom right corner was definitely a good thing to do. I wouldn't worry too much about the sky colour, nor the shadows and dappled light, that's what we would expect to see in an image like this. Just don't put an important element such as a person in dappled light. This is a very strong image Henriette, very well done. |

A great image Sanford, like Jay, I'm looking forward to seeing others you present. Some people may comment on the small part of the second cheetah on the left. I'm assuming they were enjoying a game together, so I would prefer to see that entire second cheetah. Having said that, as in all cases, you were there and we weren't. It's easy for us to comment. Of course, we would have taken the shot as well. When I look across the whole image from the top to about a third of the way down, I see some degradation that I find distracting. Other than that, this is a strong image Sanford. Congratulations. |

Another superb image Gordon. Your settings and use of multiple filters have all contributed very well to this image. Your use of foreground and background elements bring great depth to this image. Water movement is perfect and the colours are superb. Congratulations. |

A great image Jay, congratulations. I have seen images of this bridge (or a very similar one) before, but taken from an angle or from the road, not in profile like this. Your original capture if strong and your processing really lifts the colours nicely. You mention the power lines, yes they are there, as they are in all locations. They don't overly concern me, but I can also fully understand your desire for them not to be there. Compositionally the image is good, sharpness is also good in the places it's supposed to be. Very well done.

A strong image Trey, leaning towards minimalistic in my thinking. Your use of the fog cuts out further distractions from the background and forces us to focus on the irrigation system. Your conversion to b&w is a good move as I believe the original scene would have been very monochromatic to begin with. Cropping out the foreground also earns a tick. Some judges I know down here and I'm sure there are a few over there, that would comment on "wasted space", but as Jay mentioned, your use of negative space does enhance the image.
Well done. |
