73 Dec 21 Reply A great result Tom. Very well done. Dec 26th
73 Dec 21 Reply Thanks for your comments Sherry. As with many of my photographic ideas (I'm now a portfolio junky) they start small, take on a life of their own and grow. As I mentioned to Dave, this one didn't make the cut only because I felt there were other stronger images. Having said that, I have not put this idea away completely. Part of its growing was the thought of a two part photo book "Sydney 1918 / Sydney 2018". The old stone and timber / the new glass and concrete. Who knows what next year will bring as we begin to get out and about again. Maybe I'll continue and just change the title to Sydney 2022.:) Dec 21st
73 Dec 21 Reply Thanks for your comments Dave. When I converted all the images to B&W they sometimes were a little flat, so on those I applied a bit of a tone. For me, this gave them a little lift, but also maintained that old school 1918 feel. The only reason this one did not make the cut was because I felt there were other stronger images. Dec 21st
73 Dec 21 Reply Thanks for your comments Janos. Yes it's sad I had to crop the roofs off, but the steel and glass skyscrapers behind the killed the effect I was looking for. And yes, some of them had antennas as well. Dec 21st
73 Dec 21 Comment Welcome to the group Tom and greetings from Australia. What a great introductory and first up image. You have definitely captured the sheep's majesty and the American wilderness. My only concern is that when I am faced with an image that has an out of focus foreground, I sometimes have trouble getting my eye to look past that area of distraction. But that's just me. If say the bottom half of the foreground grass was to be cropped off, my personal issues would be pretty much over and nothing of great importance would be lost from the overall scene. There would still be sufficient information in the foreground so as not to detract from the image and the wilderness would still be there for me. Just my thoughts and again, welcome. Dec 21st
73 Dec 21 Comment A very strong image Peter. Great colours and depth. I'm going to very respectfully disagree with Janos and Dave. Sometimes the line "Less is best" is true. You as the photographer have chosen to present this image this way and as the others have said, it's all about the colour of the fallen leaves. Dec 21st
73 Dec 21 Comment A very pleasing image Debbie. You aimed for the colours and you got the colours, so it's mission accomplished. Next time, if you want to shoot the falls, shoot the falls. Dec 21st
73 Dec 21 Comment A great image Janos, but, in recent years I personally have very "content aware". The scene itself is great, but I would have picked up that piece of paper and other litter to the left of the post box, and that red bottle top half way to the right. Yes, picky I know, but less distractions. Dec 21st
73 Dec 21 Comment In my humble mind Dave, the foreground is a must. It gives me an anchor to look from, otherwise I would feel I was floating, or without your story, a possible drone shot. Construction and use of elements - spot on. Vertical format to show depth - spot on. Time of capture / lighting - spot on. This is as close as I have ever been to the grand canyon and it shows everything I would expect to see. Except of course, that horse shoe bend in the river that I have seen a bazillion times before. 73 Dec 21 Comment A rainbow is a sign of better times to come, and the blowing of the trees and grasses whisper a cleansing, to me anyway. A very wise photographer down here, always says "a photographer should always strive to draw an emotional response from the viewer, good or bad response, it makes no difference".
It's also good for us to go back through our archives and "remember".
So I believe this image is successful for both, me as your viewer, and you as the photographer.

76 Dec 21 Reply Thanks for your comments Heidi. A friend once told me there is a big difference between "taking a photo" and "making an image". He is very true. Dec 26th
76 Dec 21 Reply Thanks for your comments Jay. I was conscious of the waterline as a leading line, but it's funny to note that I did nothing in post processing with the colours. Basically, it's still a colour image. Dec 26th
76 Dec 21 Reply Sophie, like Jay and Heidi, I didn't notice the bands in the background until you pointed them out. They are also visible in your colour original, but just not as strong. Background scenery is very much expected with stage performances, and this one was chosen by the artists, not you. They fulfil their purpose, but are not over-powering. Like all of us, we see a small detail that concerns us and then we let it grow to a larger concern than it really is. No problems at all, it's still a superb image. Dec 26th
76 Dec 21 Reply Thank you for your comments Sophie. There is no need or requirement to make a choice between the two images. I only included the crashing wave to show the "true" lighting conditions at the time of capture. By the way, both images are colour images. Dec 21st
76 Dec 21 Reply Thanks Trey. I did have this one printed and there was no grain, perhaps you are looking at the sand texture or the surface of the water. Dec 21st
76 Dec 21 Reply Thanks for dropping in again Stephen, your comments are always welcome and appreciated. I'm very honoured to be compared (favorably) with other photographers from the past. Dec 21st
76 Dec 21 Reply Thank you for your comments Henriette. Dec 21st
76 Dec 21 Reply Thanks Sanford. It's fun stepping outside the box now and then and try something different. Try a bright sunny day, manual exposure mode, ISO 100 and f22 (or anything above f11) for good depth of field. And when the camera is suggesting something like 1/25 of a second, tell it "No, I want 1/4,000 of a second. Sometimes 1/2,000 and sometimes 1/6,000, depending on what you are happy with. Dec 21st
76 Dec 21 Comment Sanford, what a superb image. The Antarctic is definitely a place that produces stunning imagery. But ultimately, it is the photographer that produces the image. Am I right in assuming you also, were in a raft. The water surface suggests to me you were shooting with a high shutter speed, to negate any movement while floating and bobbing around. Your construction of the elements before you, your execution and presentation are all first rate. Excellent work Sanford. I look forward to seeing some more. Dec 21st
76 Dec 21 Comment A great close up image Trey. Congratulations. I love the lines, colours and textures. Some people would refer to this as a "pattern shot" and they would be quite right as nature itself provides some wonderful patterns. Again, your processing and presentation are spot on. Dec 21st
76 Dec 21 Comment This is a great image Henriette. I really enjoy this instant in "Life" that you have shown us. I acknowledge Trey's comments and fully understand where he is coming from, however, in my humble and personal opinion, his cropped version, does not show me the "full story". The connection between all grandparents and grandchildren is always strong, but by your including their feet and footwear, you are also showing us their lifestyle and living conditions. Congratulations on this image Henriette. Dec 21st
76 Dec 21 Comment A simply superb image Jay! I like to think you are no longer like several photographers who fire away madly at anything in front of them. I also like to think you are now "shooting big", meaning that you can then crop the image down to include the elements that you wish your viewer to see. You have done this beautifully with this one. And your processing is strong and very appropriate for this scene. Very well done indeed. Dec 21st
76 Dec 21 Comment Congratulations on your superb photography Sophie. Over the last few months you have shown us your passion for theatre and performing arts photography. As you know very well, stage lighting is a living thing. Constantly changing, sometimes it is our friend and sometimes it isn't. Also the performers are busy doing what they are doing. There are comments about the various performers, but please remember, they are doing what their director has instructed them to do, and when to do it. I look at the couple on the right and see their communication, what has made her smile that way, and why is he possibly thinking "Oh no, here we go again". The man in the background is part of the team and as such, in my mind has a right to be included. Is he looking at his partner, who may have just step out of the frame to the right? I strongly applaud your performance photography, you capture an instant in time when many things are constantly moving and changing, and that is not an easy thing to do. A superb image this month Sophie. Dec 21st
76 Dec 21 Comment Another superb image Heidi, as we've come to expect from you. The tones, details and your construction of the elements are again first rate. Even down to the reflected light on the kettle. I also like your addition of that fallen petal, it gives the illusion of many things, movement that occurred perhaps just a second ago and also the passage of time and life that is applicable to all things. As Sophie said, this would look good hanging on any wall. It is now time for you to start considering a photo book of your images. When it is ready, please let me know so I can order a copy.
