73 Jul 24 Reply Gave it a try...but it is a really strange "custom size" ;-) And it really loses detail going from 48mb down to <1mb But were I to print I don't think it would make a huge difference Jul 15th
73 Jul 24 Reply Thanks Gary, I'll give it a try. And the reason no snow .....we went in August! Im not anywhere near a cold weather person !

Now on the southern part of Iceland where all the barely inhabited areas are plentiful, have glaciers and is a different story. We did not go North at all, or at least not further than the Western area of Snaefellsnes.

I would really love to go again, but until the Volcano calms down......I'll hold off.

73 Jul 24 Comment Gary, is that water flowing down the rocks? I clearly have never seen Mammoth Hot Springs and showing my lack of knowledge about this location, but the rocks are pretty unique and colors are beautiful. Do the Hot Springs make tree growth impossible. I think I'm going to have to explore and find some information about this place. Lovely image!!!

73 Jul 24 Comment WOW! Just spectacular! I love Niagra Falls and it's been a long time since I've been there! Is this during the Holiday season? Sort of looks like that. But not a thing to say about the end result. Thanks for sharing it with us! Jul 12th
73 Jul 24 Comment I love the colors and the depth of the foliage .....not to mention the fall colors . I can't take my eyes off of the angles and winding road. Isn't this the park in Pennsylvania? I love the tree as an anchor and the angles and , all lead me into those beautiful mountains in Fall!

Great shot!!!!

73 Jul 24 Comment Dave, I can't think of a more appropriate title for this image. It is desolate and lonely. But tells a story. It makes me want to ask questions....like was it a controlled burn, was it caused by a tourist that was careless, or. a lightening strike? So many variables.
I've always had an interest in conservation, and fear that the destruction is most likely unrepairable. That has been brought home over the past 2 months with our weather issues. Our Great Grandchildren will be forced to explore outside Mother Earth, since we have past the point of no return, I think. It would be a great image for conservation groups! thanks for sharing.

May I ask why you did it as a Pano? Was it related to your location and ability to get far enough away? It is a striking photo with a message! Thanks for sharing.

73 Jul 24 Comment That was quite a spectacular shot when you consider what you went through to get it! You certainly saved the pink color and you can't slow down the sun from rising. It is a beautiful still life and worthy of printing and hanging on the wall.

For discussion, I belonged to a camera club here, but no longer attend. The group did a lot of "field trips" and most of them I enjoyed. But then they started to do topics that just don't intrigue me (part of the Florida issue - limited landscape opportunities) so I dropped out pretty much.

I have never submitted images for judging , what motivates you to do that? I totally agree my goal, like yours, is to create art that I like and want to print and hang. And I've used them for gifts when I know what the individual likes. And of course, I am the family photographer for all events!

My joy of photography is also learning everything I can about my subjects, exploring with my camera AND helping me maintain fitness. I spent my career in an intense environment and I frequently worked 10-11 hr. days so I initially started traveling with fellow photographers to give me uninterrupted time away from my job. Then when I retired 6 years ago, I decided to really learn how to use a camera properly. I had two mentors that helped me along the way.

94 Jul 24 Comment Thanks for your thoughts.
I had to really think about your question...for starters the 80-400 sits in my closet and never gets used. It is slower to latch on to the subject and too heavy, and when you get to the 400 your F/stop is so high you have to crank up the ISO...and this was before you had the flexibility of good Denoise (like LR and Topaz). May not be as much of an issue now.

When I went, I took both my D850 and D500 with three lens: all Nikkorr 24-120, 80-400, and 500PF. I used all three a lot. And I took the 80-400 for the closer subjects...but rarely birds. I use the PF for the birds. And the 24-120 for landscapes. Some of the landscapes were incredible. If I went again I would take the same type of arrangement except for Sony cameras ( A1 and 7r4) with 300Prime (and two teleconverters 1.4 and 2.0 which would take me up to 420 and 600. And the 100-400 Sony for the 7R4. I also might consider my D850 and PF lens...but not sure. I really like Prime lens so much better...

94 Jul 24 Reply I will! And it was a fantastic trip...14 days! Jul 17th
94 Jul 24 Comment Nothing cuter that a mother and cub to attract everyone's attention....camera or no camera. I've only seen one bear (live) in our neighborhood in NJ (yes New Jeresy!) On our street and I was walking my noisy dog. I rushed him indoors quickly!
But any wild life is fascinating to me, and one that is that cute.....no question. And to have both Momma and Cub even better.

I really like the way you were able to frame this and it tells a story about how Momma is very cautious to make sure nothing ahead to harm the cub.

The f/8 gave you the chance to get both into focus, even if the cub is only partial. I might try to lightning the shadows so the cub has more detail...but given black fur not sure how much you could do. I think it's a great picture and tells a story of caring for cubs. Nicely done.

94 Jul 24 Comment I really like it, the colors are beautiful and evokes a peaceful feeling which is common in the ICM. I think that is why people try them. I've tried once and it was a horrible result. and now I'm not sure I would try again. My Australian friend loves ICM, Infrared, and double exposures. Congrats on attempting it....and keep trying I bet it will continue to provide unique and lovely images! Jul 15th
94 Jul 24 Comment Beautiful! Ive not gotten the chance to see Gannet, and their colors are so beautiful! Agree about the cropping and love the birds in flight...as well as nesting! Hope you had a wonderful trip and hope the weather was cooler than here! One of my biggest disapointments about Iceland .....no Puffins! They were all out to sea! Jul 15th
94 Jul 24 Comment So I'm not going to be quite as critical....shooting Hummingbirds is one of the most difficult birds to shoot (although I would add Kingfishers to that list as well). When you are in an area like Costa Rica many of the shooting spots are set up specifically for hummers...... such as they have a feeder out to get them interested then take it away to get them to go to the flowers by putting the sugar water on the flowers. That does make it easier to get clean shots and they are still very fast.....but gives you a better chance at getting a clean background. When you are shooting out in an unaltered environment I think you invariably get lots of busy background.

So yes, the background is busy, but it does not negate the fact that you did indeed capture a very nice hummer. And there might be one thing you could try to minimize the background. Try the new lens blur feature on LR. It's not perfect and takes some trial and error but it may help. The two most distracting things are the leaf behind the wings and the one with black on it. I might try the "Remove" tool in PS to see if that helps. Just some suggestions to play around with....because the Hummingbird has decent focus .....But hurray for you for giving it a try. One of the things I noticed personally is the Mirrorless and a prime lens make s a big difference. You get faster lock on and the prime helps with the blurred backgrounds.
