Some additional History on the derelict called Garðar BA 64
A Rusting Ruin in Iceland
Garðar BA 64 is the oldest steel ship that is slowly showing the signs of rusting and sits elegantly on the shoreline at Patreksfjörður, Westfjords. The launch of this beautiful steel ship dates back to 1912, which is the same year as to when the titanic sank and met the final fate. Garðar BA 64, originally known as Globe IV, was successfully completed in Norway, by a Norwegian shipyard. Back then, it was used in the Icelandic waters for whaling. This Norwegian whaling vessel was used to break through the ice, it had a powerful steam engine along with the traditional sails, which made it a hulking hybrid.
The ship was sold to a numerous countries but in the end, it was handed over to an Icelandic owner in 1950. The ship came to Iceland after World War II and in 1963 and was renamed to Garðar BA 64. Soon the whaling restrictions exaggerated, which made it extremely difficult to survive. It was finally in 1981, it was declared that Garðar BA 64 is unsafe for further operations and services. From then onwards, this beautiful ship is standing there at the Icelandic coastline, making a perfect sight of attraction for tourists. |

I know exactly what you mean....I pick them up on others easily, but on my own images it is harder! This one is also very difficult to pick up because of the large rock splitting it in two. Ian is the master of dirt specks....the past two months he's found things I've missed! And it's not like I don't check....but the brain shuts down I think!
I also didn't mention how beautiful the lighting is on this one. That sky is spectacular! |

WOW! This image is right after Peter's Norway image and both just blow me away at nature's beauty! Congrats on this wonderful image. Glad that you found such a great spot and executed perfectly. Mother Nature helped a tad by supplying that magnificent sunrise. Thanks for sharing... Get it printed sand hung. I would think it would look great on canvas. |

I am amazed at the detail you achieved in those trees. I love wandering up and down paths like these. When living in Maryland we had what was called Trolley Trails (old trolley paths that were designated as Green Space and made into walking trails) . There is nothing more peaceful to me than seeing that trail going out into "infinity". I like the perspective you used with that path drawing my eye into the image.
I also like the B&W and can't decide which I like best! |

Interesting comparison of the colored and BNW. I actually really love the color one, it draws you in because of the bright colors and you can see the activity you are describing. On the other hand the black and white make the image look old and more sedate. The one suggestion...which I'll make before Ian beats me to it. You have a few dust spots in the sky :-)
Is there significant pollution in this area as well? There is a definite haze ....and no I would not try to remove that, it is part of the image that speaks to the area. |

I think you must love the cold! that is a great image of Yosemite Falls....Ive never been but I've heard at certain times it is very difficult to get a spot to take images, is that true?
Now as for this image...I love the info you gave and would expect that is an incredible experience. The image is gorgeous even to the trees on the top. I would expect that seeing and hearing the ice breaking is pretty remarkable. Have you ever taking a video of the falls when this is happening? |

Beautiful image Barbara. I wonder if this is in the vicinity that Peter's image was taken from last month? I do have two suggestions to enhance it a little more....Do a straighten skyline on your horizon. I think it is a little tilted. And second, your filter on far left rock does not have enough feathering on the brush and you have some of your lifting of the shadows on top left overlapping your water giving it a halo. I went in and I think Straightened it and I ended up with a small brush and just darkened the water a little to get rid of your halo. Very minor adjustments but things that any judge would pick up. This is an image worthing saving and being very proud of! Nicely done!

Thank you John! In fact I'm active in Audubon and a local NWR near me specifically for that reason. Did you know that the Great white Egret is a symbol of the Audubon Society because 2 socialites in NY discover that the feathers they used to decorate hats (in I think early 1900's) was decimating Great Whites and they were on verge of extinction? They went on to found NY's Audubon and saved the Great White Egret. |

Don. this is an amazing image. It is pretty close to perfect and seeing your story about your friend made it even better. I know you have had a long go on that shoulder and having someone that made such an effort to get you there and back when I'm sure you were itching to break loose says something special about your friend. You should get a print made for him to thank him! In fact this would make a lovely thank you card. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time....take one of my Macro shots or landscape and have them made into cards!
Nice to see you getting back to normal!!! |

Your image defines your commentary (or perhaps it's meant to be the other way around). And getting away from the heat that has plagued many places this summer (even places like South Florida that expect that kind of heat - seemed like we were broiling, instead of just hot. I happen to be a lover of smooth and silky water images because I find them soothing and cooling! The flow of water over the rocks and the beautiful green grass all create an image that reflects your short getway perfectly.

Absolutely my favorite Egret! And a great shot showing off their style! They are so much fun to watch dancing. Their antics make me smile every time. And they do love to perform for the camera.
Image is sharp and clear. Do you normally shoot on auto ISO? I rarely use it because I feel like I have no control since the Sony does not tell you what ISO (just flashes up "auto") and I can't remember how the Nikon displays. If I have any wiggle room on F stop or speed I will tweak those before I tweak the ISO. In this case can't imagine you had any options. They are just too active and you need the speed and DOF. |

Great shot!! I had the pleasure of meeting Sarita and showing her my two go to spots, Wakodahatchee and Green Cay while she was visiting Florida last month. Unfortunately very few birds were out and about due to the weather (HOT!)
And this is a Glossy Ibis feeding it's chick. They are some of the last to complete nesting and fledging of young so she was lucky to have seen some birds. I forget that other areas do not have the quantity that we have in South Florida (even in heat of summer). During peak nesting season we normally have over 200 nests of Great White Egret, Snowy Egret, Great Blue Heron, Cattle Egret,Ibis (White and Glossy), Wood Stork, Tricolor, Little Blue.....just to name a few. The one thing we do not have on South East Coast is Reddish Egret. I have to go West or North to find those interesting guys.
As for the image, The Ibis likes to get deep in the bushes so getting this shot was probably difficult. But the mothers do indeed swallow the bugs/vegetation first and process a little prior to giving it to the hatchlings. So the chick's beak and I suspect it's noisy clamoring to get the transfer completed. That is one of the more difficult images to shoot. Dark bird, deep in bush and chick clambering at Mom. Congrats Sarita you've come away with a great shot! Im sure you worked hard for that image! Nice job! |
