73 Feb 20 Reply You are right one of the disadvantages of using a zoom lens, I will give it a try to see if that improves the image. Have to search for it first and will let you know if it improves the result! Feb 16th
73 Feb 20 Reply You are right this would be better with Wide Angle Lens.....but one thing I won't do in the wide open Land Rovers is to change lens.....dust spots are a huge problem anyway and you open your camera on the dusty roads and you might as well put the camera away. We were not there for landscapes and trying to get from Point A to B, nor were we able to stop for long. So it is all about conditions at that moment. I wanted to try for the shot so I used the 80-400 that was already attached to my camera.

Why would you consider an ISO of 140 to be high? The lowest I can go is 64 and most of the time I was shooting much higher than that ...trying to get fast moving wild animals. I use auto ISO all the time because of my bird/wildlife photography. I didn't pick the ISO. I want fast shutter speed normally but do not like Shutter Priority...too often I blow them out so I find that manual with Auto ISO is my best answer. This was a serendipity moment not a well planned landscape.

Your scenario is most definitely what a good landscape photographer would use or something similar, but I would rather get one half way decent than none at all. I was pretty fascinated with the beautiful Kenyan sky.

73 Feb 20 Comment Nock,
I am so sorry I clicked on your image you included in Ian's reply to enlarge it and the image disappeared. Please feel free to repost. I am not sure what I did, but I think I made some error.

Now to this beautiful image. The composition it wonderful and getting the brick floor with all those leading lines into the building is perfect. Very nice image!

73 Feb 20 Comment All these images make me so sad to think of all the destruction and then how quickly Mother Nature is trying to repair all the damage we have done! Hoping that the smell is going away as well. I've seen so many images of all the poor animals that have suffered and so many have died. We need to wake up to the realization that Global Warming is a reality and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!! Feb 10th
73 Feb 20 Comment I think this is the month for deserts! The lighting on this one is what makes it! I think almost everyone I know that goes to Namibia gets this shot and the one inside the abandoned building. You never get tired of seeing them! The composition is spot on and the shadows make it special.

Great image. Hope you have a marvelous time in Namibia this time around!

73 Feb 20 Comment David, I love the lines and colors and then you add the moon to top it off! Nice composition! And you actually have three dust spots *one in the sky on a parallel with the one Ian mentioned and one on the sand, those are a quick fix with Lightroom. I think that is what you use (just use circle with the arrow) and it will fix it in less than a couple of seconds.

And this is such a marvelous image it would be a shame to have dust spots!

94 Feb 20 Reply It was taken from a Land Rover in Samburu National Preserve in Kenya. So, unless you consider a vehicle on wheels a blind it is not. This in the wild, which is my preference for shooting animals. We had an exceptional guide who knew much better than I how to find interesting subjects.

This particular shot would be very difficult to clone but I had another one from another angle that was much more conducive to clearing the eye, I just used clone tool. Had to get rid of the whole one side of the nesting stick but left the other side in because it did not look awkward.

94 Feb 20 Reply I have posted a larger size file! Feb 17th
94 Feb 20 Reply The newer file is now posted and big difference in size. Original was 43 kb the new one is 590kb Feb 17th
94 Feb 20 Comment So I clearly don't know elk very well! I thought it was a deer, but the coat looked all wrong. That is quite a heavy coat and Don gave me that answer without me asking. Unless I miss my on instinct on this too, I think he is also munching on some grass. So is this a juvenile or do they shed their antlers? It looks like it has lots of fur on the small antlers. Sorry, since I have not studied these mammals I am not familiar with them!

The shot is nice and clear and even has a catchlight in the eye! I might consider cropping on the top down to the top of the bush on the left and a little off the right hand side. It still leaves you with room on the side he is looking toward and helps us to focus on the elk. Very nice image!

94 Feb 20 Comment Clever title, you made me think about the meaning. Heart and prickles, right? Great macro of a cactus. I don't know if you live in AZ, but I've visited Tuscon and love the photo opportunities there. My favorite town is Sedona for landscapes, but its been a while since I have been there and was not shooting critters of all kinds when I visited. I became addicted to birds and wildlife since moving to South Florida. Birding capital of US and you can only take so many beach shots!

Very nice shot!

94 Feb 20 Comment Great detail in the bird and the worm. And getting it actively doing something even better! I would consider cropping off the blank top and a small amount on the right to get it to a standard size, it is a good action shot and all the extra space doesn't tell you anything additional about the environment that would make it worth keeping. Really nice job. Feb 5th
94 Feb 20 Reply The blue is the sky and didn't trouble me at all since the background is so clean. We got really lucky on this one since most of the smaller birds are near the water sources which means acacia trees which are very prickly looking and really are very sharp. Hard to believe elephants and giraffes actually eat them for sustenance! Feb 3rd
94 Feb 20 Comment Great image! I did not find the branch distracting either since it was just one limb. I've had to accept some shots (especially of birds) that have so much junk in them I cringe. They tend to nest in very cluttered areas at least here in Florida! So unless you get them on a branch away from their nesting area they are not normally nice and clean like this one.

When I first saw it I thought it was a Nankeen Kestrel rather than a falcon but I think it might be a Brown Falcon. It reminds me of an American bird called Common Kestrel. I really enjoy bird photography and love raptors!

Great shot!
