Gerry, Thanks for your input, I do like your crop of with the crossbar, This crop leaves a little more space between the top of the image. Bruce |

Don, Cool image with a story. Nice and sharp with good exposure for the time of day with the shadows almost overhead. The horizon appears to me to be tilted a bit and I might suggest a square crop which eliminates some of the background that is not adding any interest. I have submitted the image that shows this. Over all well done. Bruce |

Gerry, I see why you like this location to photyograph from. I have photographed a few basketball games and also use it. Your image is really good, showing peak action leaving the viewer to wonder what was the result. This is what sports photography is all about. It should do very well in any exhibition. 65,000 ISO is amazing. Bruce |

Wow Isaac, this one tics all of the boxes. Super sharp, great action, connection to the subject, exposure, composition, nice color. Interesting that I just commented on your Javelinas and I have photographed them in Texas as well plus I have photographed Kiteboard Surfing in yours same location after driving through Black Point Drive on Merritt Island, Titusville. I also witnessed a rocket launch from the space center while driving across the bridge. I was totally surprised then I saw it rising in the sky. Bruce |

Hey Bud, Will keep in touch about getting together for eagles in May. Do you live in Washington? If so I assume you go to Skagit for snow gees and owls, would love to meet up around there to shoot the breeze and talk photography. |

Michael, I have shot many images like this at Bosque del Apache and found it difficult to get good focus with the corn stalks in the background, so might suggest using a single spot focus area to eliminate the corn stalks from the area used by the auto focus. You still caught a nice image showing crane behavior. Bruce Benson (visiting from groups 72/91) |

Hey Bud I am visiting from groups 91 and 72. Cindy Marple also belongs to group 91 so checking out her post from New Mexico. I see we seem to have many of the same interests. Yellowstone, Africa, Florida?, Alaska, Washington. I am from Tacoma so may have shot next to you at Big Beef Creek for eagles. You have a wonderful collection of images. Maria, a very nice image this month as usual. I used photoshop to isolate the bright background and create a bit of contrast to make the dragonfly stand out. Just a thought. Bruce

Thanks Adrian, getting these types of images is not easy physically, or cheap, although Brooks Falls can be inexpensive if you do not mind camping. You do have to get reservations at least a year in advance and there is a narrow opportunity to get the bears at the falls since they are there for the run of spawning fish which is mostly in July and ends by the first of August. Halo Bay, Geographic Harbor McNeal River, Silver Salmon and Kinak Bay are all in Katmai National Park and provide incredible opportunities or bears. I hope you can arrange to see this some day. Richard, thanks for your comments and look forward to seeing some of your images. You have a keen eye for details which is something I do not. I remember my first years of photographing and going back to realize that I was shooting at 1/100 shutter speed for extreme action and wondered why it was blurry. I have attached a copy with some increased contrast and it indeed makes the paw stand out more. The splashing water made it difficult to see the paw. Thanks for your input, we can all learn no matter how long we have been shooting. Bruce |

Thanks Isaac, I used the wider view because I liked the way the surrounding water showed the environment they were fighting over. |

Wow what a colorful animal, The slightly soft legs do not bother me since the eyes and body are sharp. The eyes are looking toward you making a connection. Even though the background is similar to the body of the crab, the lighting on the crab makes it pop. Bruce |

Thanks Larry, You are right I have always said that the way to get good images is to be there when the action happens. In addition to the diamond created by the jaws, I liked the raging water in the background showing what they were fighting for. Bruce |

Hey Maria, nice catch and story about the turning of the fish to get it down. It is amazing how big a fish they can swallow. I have a few suggestions for you that you may or may not like. 1. the legs are cut off right at the bottom of the frame and at the ankle. Generally it is suggested to not crop or cut off at a joint or near the edge of the frame. 2. To my eye a lower perspective would give more of a birds eye view. This would require getting down low, not always possible but will also through the background more out of focus. 3. You nailed the exposure managing to not blow out any of the whites. The angle of the sun is creating some shadows on the head, neck and tail. Using adobe raw I isolated these areas with the brush tool and wasa able to lighten these areas a bit. Keep in mind that you are the maker and these are only suggestions, Bruce |

Isaac, You got them to pose with all of them facing the camera? Looks like Santa Clara Ranch, I have been there twice and saw several squadrons of Javelinas plus the bonus of a bob cat that drank at the pond for almost 20 minutes. I really like your image, it is sharp and shows an unusual subject.

Cindy, I really like this one, the head and eyes are very visible and sharp making a connection with the viewer. I hope you do not think I am being to critical, only saying what I look for when at Bosque. By the way, I got a cortisone shot in my foot and it seems to be healed. Getting old really sucks.

Jerry, great job of getting the most out of this far away scene. You got good details on the left side bird, and acceptable on the right. The action makes up for any weakness in image quality. I have a very similar image taken at Black Point Drive Merritt Island NWR. Bruce |

Steve, You present a very nice image of a Magpie, a bird that has always eluded me except for a few not so great images. The fence and the colorful branches frame the bird bringing your attention right to it. The background in nicely blurred with the subject nice and sharp. Very well done. I have never been to North Dakota but sounds like a grate place. Bruce |

Thanks Larry, Bosque Del Apache/ Bernardo provide endless opportunities for images like this. The corn stalks make difficult background to get a good focus so patient timing is the key. Bruce |

Cindy you are one of the lucky ones to have witnessed the spectacle at Bosque. I had an injury to my foot during our visit so had a difficult time standing for hours. One of the things I try to get there is to have the whole underside of the wings with no shadows. If you have one, I might like to see it a bit earlier to provide a different view of the head and eyes. As is is still a nice image. Bruce |
