Thank-you. The hulls are now in the middle third. Because of the dark water on the left it may have that effect I think. |

From an outsider, I like both images. I think Martin has perhaps presented a truer to life version of the backlit branch with more impact, but the quieter shades of Jim's version is also effective. |

Thanks, I agree. The best option I can come up with is to crop so that the hulls are at the one third line, thus taking out the majority of the branches. |

To me the eyes make the image and color shows them best, so I vote color. Also I think the red hair is part of her ancestral, but sad story. The background is good but I think could be blurred some more. Martin, you have a superb gift to bring out character in portraits. |

Exciting image and great adjustments by Martin. Also I might try "content aware" to add some space at the top, but might not work very well. I like the way his left foot is about the stamp down and wonder how he kept his balance! |

Sounds like a great part of the world. I have been told by an expert that Kingfishers are a big challenge because of their continuously active and fast-moving lifestyle and flight speed, so good capture! I wondered if it was part of a burst or if he had been sitting on a branch. |

Interesting image with story and good lighting, possibly close to sunset/sunrise. I would leave your possible journalistic intention to show life as is and not crop vey much. Portraying the woman alone could be a different project. |

What a unique sunrise shot perhaps symbolizing "light at the end of the tunnel". Thanks for the lessons in use of flash to improve a backlit object. I'm quite new to this, but think the lighting on the branch came out well to reveal the pastel shades. You could argue that masking in some shade might be helpful, but I don't think so. |

Great advice - I could not find a worthwhile foreground other than the branches. |

Thanks. Yes - you are right, closer would mean falling into icy water. I had considered some cloning out some of the branches but decided not to because of the gradient. |
