John, this is an impressive view of the city. I think you have composed it well with the slogan over the cityscape. Mono works well and I like the symmetry at the base of the shot. It's clearly a busy image which is the whole point of showing the city but there are several areas where vertical bands of white cut through the image and draw the eye - possibly reflections or something like that. I have had a go at removing a few of these with the Photoshop Remove tool and it can do a pretty good job to the extent of filling in quite accurately the parts of the log o where the white bands cut across it. I also adjusted the brightness and contrast a little to make the image pop out a little more but of course you may prefer it as it is. |

Kathleen, this is an interesting but 'difficult' shot to critique. The reason is that there is so much in this image that it is hard to know exactly where to look. However, that is probably just how it is when you enter a building like this and you look all around and try to get a sense of what it is. But after that I thought about how you might make the image into one that was simpler to look at. So how about turning it into portrait format by cropping both left and right so that you take out the glaring lights either side and you make this a shot of the people making their way to the cross at the far end? And maybe the verticals need a little straightening as the arch looks slightly off - or is that just me? The sepia effect works well for me. |

Gerard, this is a very interesting study with plenty of light and shade and different curves to explore. I like the black background which sets the orchid off very well. Your depth of field at f2.8 has caught the centre of the flower sharply but it's a matter of taste how much you want sharp as several of the other petals are less distinct. But well done for a result that overcame the contortions! |

Barbara, your tulips are certainly giving plenty of scope for different images. I have some white ones in my garden that have been really great this year so maybe I need to try out some of your techniques. This one is very well exposed and composed. I love the light and shade in it and the way the leaves and flower bend - particularly the leaf on the far right. You might consider either cropping a little off the base as I find the bright leaf there somewhat distracting - or maybe darkening it somewhat. For a similar reason Would also crop in a little from the left to remove a little of the brightness there and to make a more compact frame for the image. |

Thanks Gerard. Strangely I've called it 'Doing nothing much' as that's what they look like but in fact for some this is a picture which either does exactly that for a viewer or conversely suggest something completely the opposite. I have yet to find a competition other than in my camera club where it has had positive response. But I'm glad you and others in this group have liked it. Thanks for the follow up message. |
