Sorry for the delay in replying to your second image. I really like the shapes of this and the letterbox format. I think this image would look good as a larger print on art paper. Might be worth a try. And as for competition judges, well I've been there and some you win and some you don't! |

A beautiful cove, well captured. You have captured both the beauty and peace of this particular place. I have to ask though why you opened for this HDR effect? Was it to ensure you brought out both the detail in the shadows as well as the highlights? If so, that has worked but to my eye the colours are a bit over saturated and it might be worth seeing what happens if you make them less vivid. The blue of the sea, the green of the lower foliage and the cliff face would perhaps benefit from a toning down slightly. |

Joe, this is a crazy but very enjoyable shot and I like what you have done with it. This is almost like an old photo you have found of times gone and a record of collective lunacy. I really like the expressions and poses in this group and you have done very well to catch most of them eyes front and with good expressions. I like the vignette which suits the period feel. The only thing I'd take out would be the two lights in each far left and right windows which distract. The class of Steampunkery 2019 were certainly having a good time! Would have loved to have been there to photograph them. |

Sheldon, this is really good. I enjoyed the natural feel and pose of this shot but am in two minds about the rim lighting. I like it on her hair but am not so sure about it on her left arm. Also the white on the front of her dress appear slightly burn out and I would also reduce the highlights a fraction on her face. I'm not bothered by the skin tones looking less than attractive as I think that sometimes over-processing turns real people into waxworks. |

Marisa, I can see why you took this. It must have taken quite a while for whoever did this to make it so perfect without any damages! You did well to get the reflections without getting yourself in the image. I think the sign doesn't really help so I would remove it by cropping as long as it doesn't cut into the main display which at the same time just needs a little straightening up so that it is truly vertical. |

Joe, this is a minimalist shot in all ways. This is a tiny image but the overall impression is well conveyed of shape and light and dark. If you can add a bigger image I'd come back to it with a few more comments. |

John, it may have been a dull day but you have captured an interesting shot here. The landing gear, the boat and the lighthouse make a nice triangle and the quayside provides extra texture and interest. It's a pretty bland sky and it might be worth experimenting with a more dramatic replacement but maybe the subject matter is meant to be restful so adding that might not be the best move! |

Randy, this is an interesting change that you have created here. On the one hand it's perfectly possible to enjoy the original colour image and its cropped version in letterbox format. The mono version certainly alters it radically. You say you have tried to create what a past harvest might have looked like, so I guess what you were trying to achieve was an image that might have been taken way back and given it a feel of being taken by a far less sophisticated camera than we have today. So although I agree it is a little 'flat' nevertheless I think you have achieved what you set out to do. The image forces the viewer to peer into it as it is almost as if it is muffled and from a different era. There is also a sense of emptiness to it as if all human life has departed now that the harvest has been done. |

Hi Michael, thanks for this shot which definitely works better in mono and with the treatment you have given it. The colour version is very flat but you have added a sense of mystery and bleakness to the image. Great that you have all those birds on the largest tree. My only suggestion is that you might adjust the contrast a little to make the islands a little more powerful in the image or darken the sky and water as an alternative. |

Linda, I enjoyed seeing this and had I been there would have been pleased to get the opportunity to photograph him. You have captured him very well and also handled the processing well. Have you substituted the background? Probably not but the reason I ask is that I was looking at the stray hairs that are on his right side at the lower part of his hat which don't quite seem to match the original. I think the lighting on his face is fine but if you wanted to just add a touch extra exposure on his right eye, maybe. |

Another bold image this month! It's always good to see the natural world up close and personal as yet reveals so much. I like the texture you have caught here but would agree with some other comments that a warmer version helps reduce the in your face aspect of this object. |

Barbara, this is a bold image. I like the drama that you have created with it. I agree that the white cloud on the left needs a little toning down but I would keep it in. The sky replacement works as it has given the building an aura which helps the drama. My only question and I hope you'll take this the right way - was the sky replacement one of your shots or a found one? We are currently debating this issue in my camera club and probably not getting very far with it! Probably the issue is resolved by what happens to an image - whether it is just for one's own enjoyment or whether it is submitted anywhere for a competition. |
