17 Nov 21 Comment Joe, I struggled with this image! Those chairs look pretty uncomfortable to me! But that's besides the point. A colourful image but what is the main focus point? Is it the chairs, the house or the chairs and the crab box? I'm not sure. I think this image is need of a very tight crop. I know you wanted to give an impression of the town but you could still do that by cropping out the house and some of the foreground. Or keep the house and crop in from the right to lose part of the chairs on the right. However, maybe this is an image where there are too many issues and maybe it does convey the essence of this town and trying to impose 'rules of photography' on it is pointless. In many cases I think attempting to 'get it right' negates the whole pleasure of photography. I certainly enjoyed seeing this image from a part of the world I will probably never visit, so thank you. 17 Nov 21 Comment Sure this is dead central but makes the viewer know what is the main point of this image. Bold and in your face but I wonder if there is a blue cast on this unless the sailboat did have slightly blue sails? Or is that just the blue reflected from the sea? Maybe trying some white balance adjustments would sort that out. The foreground rocks are perhaps a little bright.

17 Nov 21 Comment Sheldon, you did a good job with the hot spots and I will remember that technique. Well posed and yet still looking natural. I agree with Joe that the background needs attention even if your daughter wanted to give the impression that she was very studious! Nov 5th
17 Nov 21 Comment Marisa, this was a difficult image to take and your persistence in photographing it must be applauded. The black background helps display the beauty of this flower but it is rather too bright so you could tone down the highlights somewhat and also remove the white light dot near the bottom. Your second shot with a single bloom is the better image. Nov 5th
17 Nov 21 Comment Joe, this is a stunning image and one that really captures the attention. Even though the balloon is dead central you have the background with the sun well caught in the far hills to add interest and the dark reflections lead nicely into the balloon. If any improvements could be made I would suggest toning down slightly the light reflections on the right where the sunlight is dancing on the water. Really enjoyed looking at this. Nov 5th
17 Nov 21 Comment John, you have done a good job with this as the conversion to mono seems to have almost avoided blow out in the whiter areas of the feathers. I like th beady eye and the catchlight in it. I think darkening the background would help throw the main image forward and make it more dramatic and would remove the very bright objects that draw the eye. Nov 5th

99 Nov 21 Comment Randy, I too have followed some of Harold Davis' online tutorials but mainly those in which you take a series of shots at different exposures and then combine the images and take out on each level what you don't want to keep in and this can produce a kind of 3D effect. But this method I think is different. I like what you have done and I see that you took out that stray bud and stalk as well as the vase, which was a good move. It is a high key image so it's perhaps unfair to say that some of the petals are now very white or maybe a little blown out in the lower section of the flower and maybe could be restored. Again, it's very interesting to see what a mono version of a subject normally seen in colour does bringing out far more of the flower's construction. Nov 4th
99 Nov 21 Comment A shot full of mood and action. Good composition and treatment. I agree with Gerard about the rock in the foreground and your revision of that certainly helps. I am intrigued by that piece of metal pole or rod on the rocks - what is it? Not the remains of your tripod I hope! Nov 4th
99 Nov 21 Comment Great shot and really like the woman in the background. This really tells a story even if what it is depends on each individual viewer. Yes, tone down the blown out areas where the sun is catching the dust rising and also consider Michael's sepia/antique treatment which would fit the overall feel of this image. Nov 4th
99 Nov 21 Comment Great image. I really like the textures in this and it might make a very pleasing print on fine art paper. The intensity of the light on the top right is a little over-powering and I would like to see more of the bean pod texture in that part of the image. Good title and I see the bird rising. Mono works well but those pods are such a great colour that it would look fine that way too. Nov 4th
99 Nov 21 Comment Hi Barbara
As I think I may have said before, turning a beautiful colour image of a flower into a mono shot has to be with good reason and to gain more impact then it does in colour. And here I think you have achieved that. I like the angle and the depth of field especially on the raindrops so well done with the focus stacking. I do not know about Helicon but have been able to use an in camera facility on my Fuji XT3 to do 'focus shifting' which you may also have on the Nikon.
I think what you have achieved is something very different from the original. The delicate flower head is now far more substantial and almost as if it has been carved out of a hard material or rock. Good to see the usual presented in a very different way.

99 Nov 21 Reply Michael, thanks for your reply which was very useful. I have just started exploring the new masking tools in Photoshop Camera Raw and think they will be extremely useful. I like what you have done with the image and will have a go at replicating it. But as I have said to Gerard I now think this is not an abstract image but nevertheless may use it in another competition. Nov 4th
99 Nov 21 Reply Gerard, thanks for your helpful comments. However, I have come to the conclusion that even with a more severe crop this would still not work as an abstract but i have since created another which definitely fits the brief - but it's not a mono image! Nov 4th
