Glenn, I can see the attraction of the billowing grass set agains the tree trunks but if that was your intention, I wonder if you had some other images taken from a lower position where the grasses are more prominent and there is less of the trees. I think this is an image that might also work just as well in mono. I also find the trees and light on the right somewhat bright and would suggest a strong crop so that you almost come up against the main clump of five trees as this pulls the eye directly towards them and the grasses at their base. |

An interesting architecture shot and it was thoughtful of you to include the website link so that after the pandemic we can all book a night's stay as a group activity as long as no one minds sharing the bath our half bath or maybe just roughs it by using the outdoor shower! Interesting that the website image is almost identical to yours but includes the US flag on the left. I think this image is mostly about shapes and the rectangular shape of the house contrasts well with the curves of the lighthouse. |

This is an impressive image as is the one of the star trails. Of the two, it's the star trails one that I prefer because it gives a great idea of the movement in the night sky. How long did it take StarStax to build that image? |

This is an intriguing image which I like a lot. The effect is dramatic as the shape of the rock face looks like a face in profile - is that how I'm meant to read it? I like the small bush at the base too which gives a sense of scale. |

An amusing image even if the camera maybe lies on this one?! It could be that he had just fallen over or he is just about to make a repair. Whatever, the title fits this well. I think quite a strong crop to take out the gate which would place more of the focus on the railway guy. |

Thanks for your comments Linda. I will experiment with a tighter crop. |

Randy, you have done well to crop this in from such a large image and still achieve a detailed image of this bird. On this occasion I would have liked it not to be so close so that more of its perch was giving us more context of the bird's habitat. |

Michael, this is a great shot of the textures of this rugged landscape. You did well also to avoid the mad clamber to the top if the path was so perilous! This is an image which is difficult to suggest improvements to as it conveys the scene perfectly well but I agree with Gerard's suggestion about a higher crop. The only other thing I would suggest and it may be a bit mad is that for me that lone tree growing in the middle of the cut is a fascinating focus point. I wonder if there is an image there of just that growing valiantly in the rock face?

Gerard, I'm late to the party so have the benefit of the previous comments and your revision. But yes I do think your reduced brightness does help. However, I am not so fond of all of the bottle! Or the plinth on which it stands as I think both of these detract from what you are trying to show which is the decay off the tulip - sorry. So, I would consider just showing half of the bottle above the waterline. Incidentally, the colour that is now in the bottle in your revision makes this less of a problem! |

Barbara, this is one of those shots where actually it works both in colour and mono and for very different reasons. I love the warmth of the colour version but the mono version is far more dramatic. I agree though that in the mono version the trees at the top distract from the lines of shadows/light and the texture of the wood. So I would crop this tighter down from the top as suggested by Gerard. |

Thanks Michael for your comments. As for the leaf - that's one of those difficult decisions. I left that in to give some kind of context to the shot even though it is out of focus and indistinct. Sometimes it's a just a case of making a decision and living with the fact that it will be OK with some viewers and not with others. In a competition what for one judge might be a problem, for another it would be fine! It's a bit like if you have a photo of a model and part of a foot or hand is cut off but everyone knows it's there. |

Thanks Gerard. I like the idea of the negative space but was not happy keeping in too much of the foliage which is out of focus. As it is I have left in a few leaves but even they are maybe a distraction - see Michael's comment. |
