There is one other book that is very useful and that's 'How to cheat in Photoshop' by Steve Caplin. It's not really about cheating - more about how to learn Photoshop techniques and how to manipulate images. It's very comprehensive and has gone through many editions. Highly recommended. You need to dip in where appropriate.

17 Feb 19 Reply Sheldon, thanks for your very kind words. For many years I had avoided trying to do this sort of thing for two reason.
1. I prefer taking images of 'normal people in normal real-life situations.
2. I just couldn't get my head around Photoshop layers.
However, some of my 'normal' images didn't work on their own and the Mad Hatter and 'Alice' were two of them.
I had been experimenting with Photoshop and have a good friend who is far more adept than I am who can assist when I get stuck but I have also used a few books. Two in particular are 'Drop Dead Fantasy Techniques' by Derek Lea - now out of print probably but can be picked up second hand and 'Creative Photography Ideas' by Tony Worobiec.
I have also used a creative software course called IPHOTO - https://learn.iphotoshopcourse.com/student-only-content/?wlfrom=%2Fenter-course%2F which can be a little irritating but does go slowly enough for you to be able to pick up techniques such as cutting out. Worth a look.

17 Feb 19 Comment Photographing these statues and fountains is never easy. Getting the angle right, avoiding the crowds and more importantly adding something of yourself to what has been created by other artists is so important. You have managed all these things and made what could be a very mundane shot something very lively and powerful. I like it a lot - my only really picky question is - is the horizon totally level? There is something about the buildings in the background that just seem to slope to the right.
Or is it me and I'm sitting looking at my monitor at an odd angle?!

17 Feb 19 Comment This is wonderful. I love the energy captured in this and your technique is really good. Although the figures are important, what makes this shot really dramatic are the burning embers which spray out from the fire - especially those at the top and the larger separate ones at the side. Whilst I have been to India, I have never seen this - and wish I had! Feb 7th
17 Feb 19 Comment Great spot! A dramatic image which was difficult to photograph. Very good technique on the far balloons too. The only weakness, if it is that, is the area of dark blankness beneath the deflating balloon but any detail in that might draw the eye too much. Despite your good work on the deflating balloon, I wonder might the image look just as good without it and a crop to remove it give the image a tighter shape?
Thank you for your comments on my image which I will return to in a reply.

17 Feb 19 Comment This is a very funny image. I enjoyed it very much. If you go back and it's still there maybe you could construct an image where the people are looking puzzled as how to reclaim their luggage - as if this was real baggage claim facility. Lighting is well handled. Feb 7th
17 Feb 19 Comment An attractive scene - well captured. Maybe the use of filters does overdo it a little but it's a question of choice and balance. The only thing that grates for me is the white on the right - which when you notice it, takes your eye from the middle of the image. Maybe crop that somewhat or darken it? Feb 7th
17 Feb 19 Comment A very strong image which would do well in a texture competition. It would also probably make a very good print and do well on card for enthusiasts. Like the title too - appropriate and simple. Feb 7th
