Barbara, to me the black and white version of the photograph helps emphasize his wistful eyes. The color in the original image detracts from the eyes which I find a bit offputting.

Thank you, Mark. I like the idea of a more rugged face. I'll play with that.

Richard, it's an amazing photograph. When I look at it, I feel both a sense of peace and delight. Initially, my eyes go straight to the mother's closed eyes. Then I "discover" the baby, and it suddenly becomes an image with an intriguing story. Well seen and well done!
I like the balance provided by the leaves on the right. However, to me, they seem slightly intrusive. So I moved them slightly to the right. Then I extended the branches on the left so that the cut ends were no longer in the frame. Finally, I added just a bit of additional headroom above the mother. Your thoughts?

Wow! Jim, you've really created a wonderful image from a photograph that many would have discarded. I love how you've brought out the two "guards" on the sides of the entrance. The perspective doesn't feel "quite right," but I was unable to improve on what you did. Well done! |

I've discovered that commenting late has a major disadvantage... everyone has already said how fantastic your image is! Extremely well done!
I like the picture of Queen Victoria but I could envision it slightly brighter and with a bit more contrast. That way, his face, the fire, and the queen's picture would make a triangle that would, perhaps, make the image even more dynamic. |

The bumper cars were always one of my favorite rides... even as an adult. The one danger I found was that I had to fight the urge to ram other cars when I drove out of the parking lot. Mark, you've definitely captured the spirit and feeling of the "event". Nicely done.
Based on Sophia's comment, I decided to play with your image. I cropped it a bit and then played with the lighting and sharpening. Your thoughts?

Happy New Year, Sophia! The lighting on the snail kite is wonderful! I do understand Jim's comment about a small white border; however, when I first looked at your photograph, it appeared that the bird was flying across my monitor's screen. I found that "freedom" quite appealing.

Outstanding! Your image gives a tangible feeling of motion. I love the colorful clothing of the rider and how his/her expression shows such tremendous concentration. Well done!

Thank you, Jim. I dropped the armor highlights since they seemed to distract from the man's face and eyes. Since I wanted to isolate the man from his background, I let him fill the entire frame. That resulted in his hat being cut off. Do you feel that was a mistake?
Thanks again.

Richard, I really appreciate your comments. I've found that some portraits, like this one, seem best when the person isn't looking into the camera. Others, like the one I submitted in October (attached below) seem to benefit from direct eye contact with the subject. I don't know how to identify which is which. It's just a feeling.

Thank you, David. I'm flattered that it's the kind of picture you might have taken. Brightening the area of the eyes is a good idea. I will make those modifications before printing the image, but will be sure not to make the eyes so bright that it appears "over-modified". Thanks again. |

Thank you, LuAnn. The Cathedral is an amazing place.
The reason for a point of view that's not centered is that there was a small tour group to my left. lol

My local camera club took the approach that sky replacement is fine as long as the sky is one of your photos. However, there hasn't yet been a rule about AI-generated backgrounds.

I agree 100% with Emil... the sky replacement was a good decision. I especially like how the sky fades in the distance, giving your image excellent depth. This compliments the perspective provided by the wires and supporting poles. Very nice!

Bob, I love the drama that your sky has added. Your final "product" captures gives a feeling of excitement and intrigue. Well done!

Emil,
I completely agree with you. My goal is to end up with an image that pleases me and, hopefully, others. How I get there is immaterial... though others don't always agree. I noticed that the Beta version of Photoshop now includes the ability to replace a photograph's background with one that's generated using a photographer's text to describe to AI what you want. Interesting.

Mark, I've always wanted to photograph in Cuba but have never had the opportunity. If/when I finally get there, I hope I can find some images that tell a story and are as intense as yours! The coach's face is wonderful and shows his concentration on the young man. Also, I love the angle that you used for this photograph. The boy's head needs to be in the image (as you've done), but the story is the coach's face. Well done!
I played a bit with your photograph to see if reducing the brightness of the boy's shirt, the coach's watch face, and the background would focus even more on the coach's face. While I was at it, I did a bit of sharpening of the man's eyes, though I didn't really notice their softness in your image.

Emil, I really like the shutter speed that you've chosen. The silky water makes such a wonderful contrast to the rocks around the falls. Well done!
I was at Looking Glass Falls a few years ago when my sister lived in Asheville, NC. The falls are beautiful and the stairs to get up to see them are also memorable!

LuAnn, Happy New Year!
I love the intricate patterns in this image. They make the B&W image so much more interesting than the original. I have Topaz Studio 2 but have clearly not spent enough time with it. Your photograph is a great motivator! |
