5 Jun 21 Comment Richard, although I agree that the end of the dead branch is a bit too bright, I really like the fact that it nearly duplicates the color and shape of the mockingbird's eye. I also like the "busy" grass that she is standing in. At first glance, the shape and color of the grass made me think of worms... a feast for her little ones.

Nicely done.

5 Jun 21 Comment I visited the zoo recently. When I reached the giraffes, I thought of you and your marvelous creations. You've added a new dimension to the animals. lol

A beautifully done composition. My only suggestion would be to put a second, smaller pair of poles toward the front of the car to further delineate the parking spot.

5 Jun 21 Comment Mark, the composition of this photograph is lovely. The sloping rocks are nicely balanced by the rising mountain on the right. I also find the grasses to be a nice, gentle contrast to the rocks... a place to rest my eyes.

To me, the image appears to have a bit too much texture and sharpening, particularly in the foreground. I don't know if this is simply due to the nature of the scene, or a result of post-processing. Nonetheless, It's a captivating view of a beautiful area.

5 Jun 21 Comment Barbara, your image resonates with me. The way the chives point to the fresh egg is wonderful and provides an outstanding composition. I like the increased saturation in David's modification. However, I prefer your slightly less bright plate. To me, the egg is the point of interest and the brightness of David's plate "confuses" my eyes a bit.

Beautifully done!

5 Jun 21 Reply Nick, thank you very much. I really benefit from the various opinions of our group. Each comment is both insightful and helpful. Jun 11th
5 Jun 21 Reply Thank you, Candia. To be honest, I didn't even notice the blue splodges. But, not that you mentioned them, I can't look at the photograph without seeing them. LOL Jun 11th
5 Jun 21 Comment David, it's a wonderful image... especially in B&W. I love the relationship to the castle with Candia's grandfather. Moving the boats closer to the castle was an excellent thought! I also thought that your cropping and removal of most of the people was an outstanding decision. Well done!

I wanted to play a bit with your photograph. So, using the original I duplicated your approach of closing the gap between the boats and the castle, as well as removing most people. However, I left the original clouds after modifying them a bit in Camera Raw. I wanted to see how the image would look with the texture of the clouds mimicking the water/mud around the boats. I also played with the lighting of the boats, water, etc. Your thoughts?

5 Jun 21 Comment Candia, welcome to the group! We've had previous members who were members of the Royal Photographic Society, so I know how talented you are! I love your image and the fact that your grandfather was so instrumental in your image. It's a remarkable photograph and evokes strong emotions. Beautifully done!

Your handling of the sky/sunset is gorgeous. It provides the subtle colours of the time of day but isn't over-saturated. Nonetheless, I wanted to see how it would hold up to even stronger colours. Your thoughts?

5 Jun 21 Reply David, thank you so much! I watched the video that you referenced and really like that technique. Previously, I used the technique described in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax6Ao5VMZI0. However, it was so complex that I only used it when it was especially important. The approach you mentioned seems equivalent and much simpler!

Just as you did, I blurred the background and reduced the saturation... but not as much as you. I noticed that you lowered the saturation of Chris and the horse as well. I like that.

Thank you again. Your suggestions/comments are very helpful.

62 Jun 21 Comment Bob, this is a wonderful image. When I first saw it, especially LuAnn's darker version, it made me think of a strange creature rising up out of the depths of the ocean.

The textures of your image are amazing. I totally agree that textures and tones are the strengths of monochrome photography.

One way to compare two images (on the PC) is to click on each image on our Group 62 page. This creates two separate tabs and it's easy to flip back-and-forth between them to see the differences. I don't know the equivalent for the Mac, but I imagine that there is one.

62 Jun 21 Comment Emil, I guess I'm a contrarian. I like sky photographs.

The symmetry that you've achieved is wonderful, and the drama yells out at the viewer... or at least at me. Smiles

I took the liberty of playing a bit with your image. I wanted to see how it would look with a bit of detail in the trees, slightly different lighting, and a mostly black frame. Your thoughts?

62 Jun 21 Reply Isreal, I like the first, original monochrome best.

Thank you for your well-wishes. I hope you and your family continue to enjoy a calm, peaceful situation.

62 Jun 21 Comment Sorry that I'm late to the "comment party". It's been pretty busy at home lately.

Israel, I love your image this month. Both the color and monochrome versions are wonderful. The triangle of the rope tied to the camel connects the people to the camel and also seems to point the way forward. Very nice.

After lots of consideration, I decided that I like your original cropping best. The additional space in front of the people and camel seems very natural and gives them room to move forward.

62 Jun 21 Comment LuAnn, your image this month grew on me (no pun intended). Initially, I struggled to appreciate its unique qualities. However, as I returned to examine it again and again, I began to realize how the photograph was attracting me to return to look at it. The composition is outstanding. It is simple, yet complex. The bright mushroom with its amazing splay of small black dots is beautifully offset by the subtle light and rough texture of the tree, especially in the upper left of the image.

Very well done!

62 Jun 21 Reply Emil, sometimes I think you're the absolute Master of Processing! I love the composition and formatting of your modification. I'll try to make the modifications you suggested, but using the original. Thank you!

62 Jun 21 Reply LuAnn, I found most of the image evaluation course both interesting and useful. There were times when I felt that it dwelled a bit too much on terminology. (E.g., "That's the golden rule, not the rule of thirds.") But, as I said, it was a useful course and I'm glad I took it.

I think you would make an excellent teacher -- of photography and post-processing, of course.

62 Jun 21 Reply LuAnn, this is outstanding! You did an amazing editing job! Reducing the lighting and using a sepia tone was exactly what this image needed.

I love how the study groups allow photographers to help improve each others' images. And, I find that I'm constantly learning from the comments/suggestions.

Since input from judges is so subjective and since their comments and recognitions are only the opinions of a single person, I've just about quit entering competitions. I still judge competitions since I'm happy to provide my thoughts if people want them. Smiles...

BTW, thank you for the input and encouragement for the Image Evaluation course. It was quite useful.

62 Jun 21 Comment Bunny, this is a wonderful image... especially in B&W. I love how the tentacles get brighter as they lead my eyes up to the bell. A beautiful creature and a well-processed photograph!

I wanted to see how your image would look if the remaining bubbles were eliminated. So, a few minutes with Photoshop's spot healing brush did the trick. What do you think?
