LuAnn,
Your zine has arrived! The 38 photographs are wonderful and I love your choice for the cover. My favorite image is the second one of the canoe being paddled toward the viewer. Outstanding!
For nine years I was responsible for a large (40-60 page) printed monthly newsletter, so I realize how much work it was to design, create, and publish the zine. Excellent work! |

Israel, Saturday the 26th at 20:00 would be great. (I believe that will be 1:00 pm EST for me.) I suspect that you'll find the process is fairly straightforward.
Looking forward to our meeting! I'll email you the link for the Zoom session beforehand.
BTW, if anyone else is interested in joining us, just let me know.

Israel,
There are actually two techniques. One of them uses only Photoshop and the second uses 3rd party software. Unfortunately, the 3rd party software is very complex and there aren't very good training facilities available. So, I'm still struggling to learn that one. However, I'd be glad to show you the Photoshop process.
Would you be able to participate in a zoom meeting? (I have a zoom account.) If so, I'll be glad to set it up at a date/time that works for both of us. Early evening for you would be mid-afternoon for me. That would be convenient for me, but please suggest a time and day that works for you.

Israel, you're an excellent photographer. If I'm able to provide a bit of helpful input, it's my honor to do so!
Yes, I thought the original image had a few distractions from the wonderful car. Also, I felt that it would be interesting to try to give a sense of heat without a great deal of brightness. I've begun to use a technique for directing light in a monochrome image that is really impressive. I have Emil to thank for that.

Isreal, I love this image. It conveys the heat of the day and the age of the area. You really did well to capture the feeling of the truck and its resting place!
I've been playing with a new approach for lighting monochrome images and thought it might be interesting to use your excellent photograph to try some of my techniques. Basically, I wanted to emphasize the heat and the direction of the sun. It is definitely not better than the image that you submitted; however, it's a bit different. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts.
Take care, my friend... and keep shooting!

Bob, I like your technique. It seems to work really well with images that have a specific direction (like the vertical directions of the trees). I wonder if a flash would further "freeze" the tree in the front. In any event, you did a beautiful and creative job with this image. Well done!

Bunny, I really like this version of your image. To be honest, I find the bright background somewhat distracting on the image you submitted. However, this one is outstanding. I also like the space that you've added. In fact, I tried adding a bit more to see how it might look. At the same time, I made some very minor modifications to the lighting. Please let me know your thoughts.
I hope you find our group members as helpful as I do. I'm always impressed with everyone's knowledge and insightful suggestions!

Leah,
Your image was captivating. I love the lines and flat surfaces and the wonderful tones that you've achieved. After reading Bob's comments, I decided to try adding some contrast to the sky. When I did that, I found that the white frame was a bit distracting. So, I removed it and then played with a vignette a bit. Here's what I came up with.... your thoughts?

Yes, I also purchased the software. It's clearly very powerful and, as Emil has said, has a steep learning curve. I've looked at both Joel's and Ben's youtube videos and got much more out of the done by Ben.
The documentation for version 2.0 of the product says that there will be a new youtube video this Sunday. I'm hoping that the video isn't done by Joel. He's clearly an excellent developer and photographer, but isn't likely to be elected "Teacher of the Year".

Thank you, LuAnn. I like your extra dose of a white vignette. It sets off Cinnamon even more.
Like you, I'm a big fan of the Topaz DeNoise AI plugin. It amazes me with how much noise it can remove without hurting the detail of an image. I generally use DeNoise first and then use the Topaz Sharpen AI plugin. They make an outstanding combination.
My recovery is progressing well. But, still 6 or 7 more weeks before I will return to normal.

LuAnn, judging from your image, you had a VERY productive summer working on macro photography! I'm amazed that you were able to get such excellent focus handheld! I'm not a big fan of tripods (mostly just lazy), but I use them for macros.
Looking at your original photograph, it appears that you severely cropped it to get the size that works so well. Yet, I don't see any significant noise. And, with an ISO of 1000, that's astounding!
Other than your skills at taking the image, I also think you did an outstanding job with your post-processing. I am especially fond of the way you handled the lighting. The fact that the insect is heading toward brighter light works well. Additionally, your use of light to highlight the tip of the leaf is excellent.
I honestly don't see any modifications that I feel would improve this image. Well done!

Emil, your post-processing of this image is truly amazing. The lighting of the area above the staircase, the steps themselves, and especially the window are extraordinary. I'm really impressed that you were able to bring out the security screen on the window. I will (continue to) look into Artisan Pro X. Thank you for this lead!
The only thing that you might think about for the photograph would be to include a bit more of the stairs on the right. I suspect that another trip to the museum isn't in the near future, but when you return it would be interesting to see all of the bottom steps.
A wonderful image! Extremely well done!

Todd, your image immediately captured my attention. And then, the excellent description further intrigued me! The crystalized pines are amazing. Just looking at them makes me cold! After reading Larry's comments, I tried playing a bit in Photoshop. My first attempt was to do a complete color balance adjustment. This was really unsuccessful! Next, I attempted to leave the blue in the sky but make the snow on the pines pure white. Frankly, this didn't work either. The image lost the "cold feeling" that I found so interesting. So, my final attempt was to leave the blue sky and a bit of blue in trees. I'm not sure how successful this was. Your thoughts?

Rich, after reading your bio I must say that you have really done beautifully with your photography in South Carolina. I love how the shape of the Kite's wings is mirrored by its tail. And, you did an amazing job with the focus... it's tack sharp!
The Kite is obviously looking at something that it's holding. That's very intriguing. In fact, it would be great if I could either see the Kite's eyes or identify what it's holding. Nonetheless, it's a fantastic photograph.... one of those that I wish I had taken.
