John, I definitely appreciate your candor.... and, I agree with you. As I replied to David above, "Some pictures just don't work and I'm afraid this is one of them."
Nonetheless, it was fun playing with the filters and learning their capabilities and limitations.

Interesting modification. I tried a combination of motion blur and "normal" blur to carry the idea even further... see below. |

Richard, like you I don't find that I can draw artistically.
I find filters very useful but it always seems to come back to "what do I want the image to 'say'". If I think through that question prior to starting work on a picture, I find that filters are often fantastic tools just like the other tools in PS. And, of course, what I want the image to say often changes as I work on it.
Occasionally, playing around with filters to see what results (as I did with the butterfly) will produce surprising and pleasing pictures. But, usually it doesn't quite live up to my hopes. Nonetheless, it's a fun and educational exercise.
Thank you for your input. |

Good thought... I'll keep it in my greeting card folder. Thanks. |

I like this one best. It has the beautiful soft shading on the rose and the OOF leaf resolved. I especially like the downward curve of the leaf that you added since is nicely balances the upward curves of the longer leaves. Nicely done. |

Thank you David. I like the changes you did and I continued playing with it using your version. Frankly, no matter what I did, it never quite spoke to me. (Latest attempt below.)
Some pictures just don't work and I'm afraid this is one of them. The original was "just a boring butterfly" photo but, you're right, the filters don't seem to create the abstract I was trying for.
Thank you for working on this with me.

What a great picture for Halloween. (JUST KIDDING!)
I really like the B&W. If it were in color it wouldn't have the same impact since your shirt, etc. would have detracted from your face. The additional detail does wonders for your beard and hair. A small fill light or reflection would have made it even better since I find that I miss seeing your right eye, even in shadow.
Nicely done!

Okay, I couldn't resist putting a little color back in it. What do you think?

Thank you, Barbara. The changes were almost exclusively with NIK's Silver Efex Pro. But, like you, I prefer the original since the yellow trees add so much to the image. |

John, I took the liberty of playing with your original image and converting it to B&W using NIK's Silver Efex Pro 2 filter. In doing this I kept the contrast fairly and also gave the image a slight tint. What do you think? |

Richard, I really like the brighter image that you posted (without the OOF petal). It makes a stricking difference. |

John, this is an extraordinary picture. I'm really wondering where you found the cabin.
The B&W conversion makes it almost appear to be an infrared photo. Amazing. |

This image, like so many of yours, tells a story. And, the more I look at it the more I see and imagine. Your choice of a vignette is superb. It sets the tone (no pun intended) for the whole scene.
I can't decide if the person in the distance adds to the picture but it feels a bit unbalanced without him/her.
You might consider eliminating the strap and satchel that the man has in his left hand but other than that (which may not be a benefit) I have nothing to add except...
BRILLIANTLY DONE!

Nick, your composite made me laugh... then I shared it with my wife and it also made her smile.
You really did an excellent job putting the dog and yourself in the car. The fact that you're looking at the dog makes it seem very natural and the "tinted windshield" is perfect.
Well done! |

Barbara, I love the delicate shading of the flower petals. They make a beautiful image... and I feel the change to monochrome was a brilliant move. Nicely done! Naturally the white "rims" don't bother me since I tend to over sharpen most of my pictures and have become insensitive to the rims. :)
There are two things that I wonder about. First, the out-of-focus petal bothers me a bit. I played with the image and found that removing that petal left the picture "out of balance". Then I tried replacing that petal with one that wasn't quite as blurred. I don't think that my edit helped but I've included it below. The petal certainly doesn't really hurt the image but I thought it might be possible to improve it even further.
The second thing that seems a bit odd is the black area that is below the petals and above the leaves. That area shows in the original picture so it's not something that you introduced. Perhaps I'm simply looking at it wrong.
In any event, the original image is beautiful and the B&W that you made is spectacular! |

Rick, this is a startling image. The owl's eyes immediately capture my attention. Their location within the frame are perfect! I like what you've done with the BG. It "fits" the image without distracting from it. If there's anything that I would modify it is the sharpness of the wing tips. It seems to me that they would be slightly blurred with motion given that the owl is actively flying. |

Yes, filters are fun. Usually I use them to enhance an image but this time I wanted to change it completely since the original was relatively dull. I attempted to tone down the white areas but I'm not sure that it works well since there are no flowing lines in those places. Nonetheless, here's what I came up with.... your thoughts? |
