Stuart, the composition is well done. Between tone, texture, and shape you have a grid of seven unique combinations! The basalt patterns are fascinating. I was trying to visualize the cave entrance and distinguish it from the shadow so I looked up photos of Fingal's Cave. Your perspective is unique and nicely seen. |

The action grabs my attention, particularly the steep angle of the surfer in his turn. I have always wondered what the purpose of touching the water during a turn is. Whatever it is it looks cool. |

You have created a wonderful portrait of the cow. The gate in the background adds depth to the image. The light nose and horns are a nice enhancement. very nice.

You did a nice job taming the very challenging extreme tonal contrast between the shadowed and sunlit areas. The tonal range is still wide and would benefit from burning the highlights some more and dodging the right side face to add contrast with the left side of the canyon. I would restore the crop at the base of the canyon and remove the bright rock at the bottom right corner, which may have been your reason for cropping in the first place. John, thank you for your service to this group as Administrator. I hope you stay active with your travels and photography. |

Thank you Lance. I am aware of Walker Evans' connection to St. Michael's Cemetery. A few years ago I located the point of view of his photo Graveyard and Steel Mill and created a more current version of the photo, attached. The large cross is gone but several recognizable features remain, which allowed me to approximate Mr. Walker's point of view. A small tree blocks the view of the end row house but in the late fall or winter the house is visible. |
