There is a delay in noticing the mother baboon. But she is there. Her watchful gesture is clear. I do not think that highlighting the expression on her face adds much to the story. This is an example of the Gestalt principle of Emergence. |

Thank you Stuart. The story behind the tonal treatment of the mother's face is the story of a mother's, or parent's, ever-present concern for her child. Even if she is in the background barely noticed her presence anchors the image. We know the object of her gaze, even if some details in her expression are not visible. |

The baby's chest is bright but is not actually blown out. The detail in the hairs is visible. My intention was to contrast the brightly lit baby with the presence of it's watchful mother in the shadows. Even without dodging the mother baboon's face, it is clear that she is watching the baby, so I felt no need to brighten it. |

This is a very clean and crisp photo that tells a story to me. I would not change a thing. Nicely done. |

Again, a nice graphical abstract Helen. For my taste, the high key treatment is a bit hot. It limits the depth in places such as between the railing and the steps behind it. The contrasting black shapes stand out starkly and are very abstract. My mind keeps wanting to find connections between them. I could not do it and it left me uncomfortable as some abstracts do. |

I like the massive rock and interesting shapes and textures. To me, this photo is about the rock formation. The foreground is busy and distracting and does not add much to the photo. I would try to simplify the photo by cropping the foreground to the lowest bench on the rock formation and the left side to remove the tree. |

Don, the IR treatment enhances this is a peaceful scene. The winter appearance of the white leaves and grass lend a definite coolness to the photo. The dark areas and writing on the obelisk have the appearance of a calotype print. Nicely done. Have fun with your IR camera. |

You captured the contrast between the tanker and your ship very well. The conversion to black and white removed the color contrast, which was significant, but adds emphasis to the size difference of the two vessels. Nicely done. How do you like the Sony DSC-HX90 for travel? |
