Thanks John. I think this is a very penetrating observation...as you know folks who were interned at Ellis because of health issues really would have preferred being on the mainland and free to experience the USA-so they were probably not very happy being cooped up! ...Also, Interestingly we were told that at some point during WWII POWs were interned at Ellis as well...whether they were in this specific ward room I don't know.
...I am very glad that this image has evoked so many insightful observations from group members.

Thanks Stephen. Yes, Ellis Island is a very special place...It is almost as if the rooms talk to you...Interestingly in its time the hospital itself was one of the most modern in the nation...we were told that it was based on a model developed by Florence Nightingale! |

Hi Stephen,
The chair was already there & the angle I took the photo from appeared to be the best one to get the sense of solitude I wanted.

Hi, to get the max depth of field -especially when not @ a hi F stop what works is focusing 1/3 into the frame-that should keep the first 1/3 sharp as well as the back 2/3rds |

Nice image Tracy! Nice colors!
Some questions-Did you consider trying a longer exposure )(>1 sec) to see what the image would like with `silky' water? Also, where did you place your focus?-the depth of field seems a bit off which would be unusual with a super wide angle lens.

Hi Carroll,
I think this is a great environmental portrait.
...You probably couldn't do anything about it but the robe <?> hanging in the background is a bit distracting. Similarly so, the plates in the far left of the image.

Hi Bob, This is one cool image!
Comments: Any chance of shooting it from a different angle to eliminate the folks sitting on the stoop in the background?
Also, I'm not clear on what is on the ground next to the fellow's left foot <?>

Hi Stan, A beautiful image! Having been to NS & Peggy's Cove I can appreciate how difficult it can be to get the good weather needed for this image! The image is inviting & interesting.
My only comment on the subject-and I understand that its probably something you couldn't do anything about given travel-is that this image would be interesting as well if taken at sunset or just before dawn. Also, in terms of processing did you take a look at how it would be in B&W-the reds & whites may make it `pop'<?>

Harriet,
A nice pet portrait!
Some suggestions/questions: did you focus on the eyes?-they look a bit soft...what F/stop did you use?-portraits usually can be done with 5.6 or 8 (or less depending on lens sharpness).
...And just as a matter of my own preference I find the leaves beneath Francesca's chin a bit distracting.

Nice image John! It really evokes a feeling of the Victorian era. And nice B&W treatment!
...Did you consider cropping so that the image focuses on the printer, part of the paper & eliminates the things beginning with where the paper rises and eliminating things beyond the printer's right elbow?
