A very good photojournalist image in a difficult environment. I agree with Tracy & Stan's comments...in addition you might want to see if the Senator's hair might serve as a white balance selector (?)...I would be curious to know the EXIF data-what was the f stop...I ask because there seems to be a loss of some sharpness between the right & left eyes. |

Tracy, This is a very good effort & I think it is very tough to do what you want to do. That being said its fun to try and you never know what will `develop' <g>
Autofocus shouldn't be an issue because in macro manual focus is usually the more precise way to go...
Suggestions to consider
-- to have a higher F-stop...
--another solution is to try focus stacking on the part of the image you want sharpest
... a focusing rail (they are relatively inexpensive) may help you get some more precise focusing
...You might also want to take a look at the website of Roman Kurywczak -
roaminwithroman.com - Roman has a technique of doing macro with off camera flash that really works and it is relatively easy to do!
...Concerning focus stacking you might want to access Charles Batchelder's presentation on YouTube titled Traditional Still Life Photography V2
`Hope this helps,

Great travel image Carroll!
I especially like the vibrant colors.
...Some questions/suggestions
--did you consider lightening the shadows on the monk's body so the body art would be more visible?
--did you consider cropping in from the left to the wall (?) before the red cloth and from the right (until the start of the stove?)

WoW! Great Image Stan. Hand held from a boat no less!
Just 2 comments /suggestions
--have you considered darkening the sky in the upper right?--it is a bit distracting
--have you considered cropping in closer on the head of the Eagle?--the branches hiding the body are somewhat distracting from an otherwise beautiful image.

Harriet, I think this is a good effort...I don't have cat myself but photographer friends who do say that if you can photograph a cat you can photograph anything!
...Some suggestions;
--What is the F-stop?.. It isn't mentioned but you might want to try F5.6 or F8 & focus on the eyes
--Given the overall darkness of the scene did you try underexposing?
--It might give you a bit more freedom to take the image in color and convert to B&W in LR/PS
--Perhaps a tighter crop eliminating the leaves would help as well?

Hello John, I like the conception of this image . I also agree with Bob's comments. In addition I wonder if a tighter crop--eliminating space under the shadow of the 1 piece of string might help. Also, perhaps using PS or LR to bring out the clouds ( i think they are clouds?) in the window might add interest. |
