Thanks, Dick. My repaired computer will return on Tuesday, hooray. I'll go back to Helicon then although I need to try the feature that Tom mentioned. |

Ah yes, I remember that when following the tutorial in the Affinity workbook. I'll give it another try. Thanks, Tom. |

I'm finding that Affinity's stacks often leave a ghost, especially in the foreground. Did you find anything like this? |

Yes, it looks odd, I hadn't noticed it before I took the pic else I'd have probably chosen a different toothbrush. It is actually one of several pieces of soft plastic amongst the normal bristles. The manufacturer must have thought it has some benefit to the user. |

Very interesting. I love it when a macro shot is different to any I've seen before, and this scores there. I like the way that the sun hasn't blown away details as I'd have expected, the opacity in the centre must have been exactly right to achieve this. The outer circle of petals (?) seem less sharp than the centre - is this depth of field or diffraction I wonder? The effect is very nice, it's not a negative comment.
I wonder about your title - the reflection doesn't seem to me to be the focus of attention, so Salsify Sunset or something seems more appropriate to me. Oh, now I've got The Kinks going round in my head....

Good job,Salvadore! If I could be picky, perhaps a little off the right edge now to balance it? All the out of focus area isn't adding much once it's done its job near the insect.

There are some interesting shapes and textures, but somehow it doesn't look as sharp to me as your usual photos, Tom.
For me, it lacks a point of interest, and the petal on the top left looks dissimilar and distracting to me, so I'd crop off about 1/4 from the left edge, making it square. A bug would be good! I'm not very good at this, but here goes..... |

I think it's very nice, Janet. The pod gives an illusion of partial transparency, maybe it's just a dark shadow at its far end? I do like the textures and colour and the curves of the veins. The only distracting part to me is the stem on the pod - could it have been put in line and shortened, to echo the leaf? It looks natural to me, the loss of detail of the snow makes me concentrated on the leaf and pod, which I do like. |

Well I'm no expert, but it does look like a grasshopper or locust or similar. Over here, grasshoppers are green I think. Despite the harsh light, it's pleasingly devoid of many blocked shadows. I think the depth of field and sharpness are great, and the constrast between the metal and the insect's camouflage is great.
I would crop off the light brown band on the left and clone out the smaller triangle of darkness on the top left. |

Thanks for all your comments. I do like taking things to extremes sometimes, and accept that many people find them - well - too extreme. I did a similar trick with John's picture of the boats this month, and here he is suggesting I transform this to more like his posted boats picture to suit his taste. I don't disagree, but I thought mine was a bit bland and confusing when it was a more normal mono. It's all personal style, preference and ideas, and I say long may it last! One day I'll find something that is able to become my normal "house style", although I'm not considering this one! |

I think you were right to seek something more than the arch alone, as that would be fairly uninteresting. Although even if you crop off the granite the tones and lines and clouds make the most of the lone arch. (If I did that I'd also crop a bit off the left to make it symmetrical.) But back to your picture, I think it's better then the lone arch, but Jerry's idea sounds good. |

Street photography is so opportunistic, and I think this is so nearly there. If I see a potential situation like this I shoot on low speed continuous as a small change in pose can change the picture so much. Here I think that a view of the second girl's eyes is essential for a complete picture. I agree with the comments about the bright windows of course. |

I like the colour photo, but I love the mono. There are reflections there, but they add to the result in my view. I like the range of tones and the plainness of the background. I would agre with Jerry, a small visual separation would be a little better I think. |

Yes, I like the way the pattern of the ice complements the pattern of the trees. I thought the same as Jerry and inverting my laptop reveals an interesting picture but it then looks like a reflective ceiling to me, not quite right. Overall I prefer it the right way up.
Did you crop off any of the bottom edge? I wish the tops of the trees were still visible. |

My first impression was "nice, but flat". So I've copied it and had a play with it in Affinity.
Layer 1 - contrast +100%, brightness -8%, blend mode vivid light
Layer 2 - threshold 0%, opacity 25%
Layer 3 - levels, black 22%, white 90%
Burn brush - opacity 30%, flow 50%, hardness 0% - several passes round the outside to vignette
Dramatic! A bit pixellated due to the low res screen capture. Probably a Bovril picture now? |
